On the occasion of Cyber Protection Week, which will be celebrated for the first time in Israel from today (Sunday) until October 29, the national cyber network, in collaboration with Facebook Israel, is launching a campaign to strengthen people's protection of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp accounts.

This week includes an extensive campaign designed by the lineup under the motto "All it takes is a little more reinforcement" and "Take a minute" to perform basic cyber protection operations such as 2-step verification, software updating, password replacement and backups.

In addition, this week includes

a comprehensive website with recommendations

in all areas of civil protection, an extensive campaign designed by the organization and involving more than 120 public and private entities, including Facebook Israel.

In the past year, from September 2019 to September 2020, the 119th operational center of the national cyber system received about 10,000 reports from citizens and organizations that experienced various cyber incidents such as hacking into social networks, home router, home cameras, private email accounts and more.

Of these, about 3,000 reports of WhatsApp account hijacking from people who have fallen victim to fraud and provided code to an impersonating hacker.

How do you defend yourself?

The national cyber system and Facebook recommend activating additional password verification - 2-step verification, an easy step to create additional security on accounts such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp that helps protect them from hacking attempts.

After this setting, you will be asked to enter a special login code, or confirm via an authentication app, the login attempt, only when someone tries to access it from a browser or an unidentified mobile device.

"This year we can see a global increase in cyber attacks and attacks targeting citizens through social networks and popular apps," said Dana Toren, director of the National Cyber Reporting Center.

"This is a global trend, but with simple steps that take less than a minute, you can harden the settings and better protect everyone's personal and organizational page."

"The safety of people on our platforms is always in front of our eyes, and we put a lot of effort into it," says Maayan Sarig, VP of Communications at Facebook Israel. "In recent years, we have changed security and privacy settings, made them simpler and more accessible. For people to update security settings and we have built shortcuts to the most important security and privacy settings.

"We hope that through the joint campaign we will be able to raise awareness of the importance of two-step verification, which has a real capacity in helping people against hacking into their accounts," Sarig added.
