Coronavirus: new record of cases in the world, WHO worries about "vaccine nationalism"

New record of cases, according to WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced Sunday, October 25 that it recorded a new world record - 465,319 cases - of contamination by the coronavirus on Saturday for the third day in a row.

Several countries have broken their own record of cases.

So in France, where 52,010 additional cases were recorded in 24 hours, according to official figures released on Sunday.

The number of deaths attributable to the disease rose to 116 for the day of Sunday, bringing the total toll since the start of the epidemic to 34,761 dead.

The pandemic has killed at least 1.15 million people around the world since the end of December, according to a report established by AFP from official sources on Sunday in the middle of the day.

More than 42.69 million cases have been officially diagnosed.

WHO worried about "vaccine nationalism"

The boss of the World Health Organization (WHO) called on Sunday for global solidarity in the distribution of any future vaccine against the coronavirus, against the backdrop of an explosion in the number of cases across the planet.

In a video speech at the opening of a three-day World Health Summit in Berlin, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the only way to overcome the pandemic was to do it together and make sure poorer countries have equitable access to a vaccine.

"Let me be clear: vaccine nationalism will prolong the pandemic, not shorten it,"

he said.

On the same day, Israel announced that it would begin its first clinical trials of an innovative vaccine against the coronavirus on November 1.

Restrictions and disputes in Europe

In Spain, Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Sunday the establishment with immediate effect of a state of health emergency throughout Spain, as well as a curfew everywhere except the Canary Islands.

Italy has decided to tighten restrictions against the coronavirus, despite protests in recent days in Rome and Naples against the curfew imposed in three regions.

Cinemas, theaters, sports halls and swimming pools are closed from this Monday until November 24.

Bars and restaurants must now stop serving after 6 p.m.

In Germany, as in Italy, protests are starting to emerge.

Several hundred police officers deployed on Sunday in Berlin to end a demonstration against anti-coronavirus restrictions, while at the same time an incendiary device was launched against the health authority responsible for piloting the fight against the pandemic.
