About 100 musicians from all the chamber orchestras in the country perform the song "Jerusalem of Gold" as part of a concert demonstration in front of the Knesset, in protest of the freezing of the cultural world during the Corona crisis, October 28, 2020 (Gil Shamgar)

Despite the fine he received from the police last week after presenting the existing protest, the Arab-Hebrew Theater in Jaffa also held a protest tonight (Thursday) in the open-air theater, in response to the severe damage suffered by the world of culture and theater, and its push to one of the final stages.

The event took place under the title "There is no life without culture", which appeared on many signs.

Speeches were made, works were read and various songs were performed.

The evening featured, among others, Oded Kotler, Menashe Noy, Galit Giat, Amal Morkus, Gassan Abbas, Rauda Sliman, Sophie Tzedaka and Esti Zakheim.

Hundreds of people came to the place, making sure to wear masks and maintain social distance.

Although the police also showed a prominent presence at the protest event tonight, this time they did not register a fine for the theater.

Actor and director Oded Kotler delivered a scathing speech against the government, in which he said, among other things: "The great disgrace of the country's cultural world did not subside with the laconic announcement by the Prime Minister and Minister of Culture to open concert halls in mid-December." A loving hand to the deadly corona virus, and this is how the government opposes one of the rarest phenomena in the country and society: the vibrant and vital art life, which illuminates the human aspects of our lives and society.They are the spirit in our sails of life. "The erosion of morals. The evil has disappeared from our lives, and its absence darkens our world, and the world of millions who come through our gates."

"This plague fell to the ripe rural government," Kotler added, "through which he can silence a large community of thousands of artists and professionals who present them with a mirror that reflects reality. Agreed, productive, organizational and economic, at reasonable and coordinated times, which will open the art houses to the public. "

"Israeli artists have been fighting for years for elementary support for culture and the arts, which would be equal to the reforms in the countries," Kotler added. "If we were submarines, our leaders would add more and more acquisitions, more and more corruptors." And contentment with little. Israeli artists continue to reach almost to the disgrace of hunger, and this is not an exaggeration. A few years ago, before us, the Minister of Culture, we give back to you and your partners! "

The protest event also featured an excerpt from the play "The Yellow Time" based on David Grossman's book;

Against the background of Yitzhak Rabin Memorial Day, the musician Yair Dalal performed the song "Zaman El Salam" which he also sang at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony won by Rabin, Shimon Peres and Yasser Arafat;

Galit Giat performed the song "Erez" created by Shaike Peikov and performed by Ilanit and was filled with melancholy when she sang the words "A land in which we will live, whatever it may be";

Actress Dalia Shimko read a monologue from Charlie Chaplin's "The Great Dictator", which includes the line: "To my listeners I say, do not despair, the misery that befalls us is fleeting."

Actor Menashe Noy read a short excerpt: "The actor who was silent, because he wanted to play in the play of the director who was silent, because his life was to direct the play of the playwright who was silent, because he wanted to write for the theater he was silent, "Because she had to rule the people who were silent, because there was nothing more to say and they had to be silent."

The heads of the Jaffa Theater said: "If you do not make love then you do not get pregnant and if you do not make theater then it is impossible to live."

They also sadly added that "if all the theaters had taken care to join us the situation would have changed".

And producer Rami Beja said "this is for you and for me a real war of existence".

Last week, as a protest step, the theater staged the play "Umm Kulthum" directed by Yigal Ezrati and starring Galit Giat, in the theater plaza.

According to government guidelines, cultural events are now not allowed outside as well, but the theater staged it as a protest show "due to the growing distress of artists and technicians who were left without a horizon."

Police arrived at the scene, and the theater staff explained to them that it was a demonstration and continued the play.

Although the police did not disperse the crowd, they fined the theater NIS 5,000.

Theater director Yigal Ezrati said he did not intend to pay the fine and would go to court.
