The Nice attack on Thursday morning pushed Jean Castex to raise the Vigipirate plan to its maximum level.
It is raised to the level of “emergency attack” throughout the national territory, while France is already placed in a state of health emergency due to the Covid-19 epidemic.
Prime Minister Jean Castex said that a defense council would take place on Friday morning.
The head of government denounced in front of the hemicycle an "attack as cowardly as barbaric which mourns the whole country".
The “attack emergency” level is the highest level of the vigipirate plan.
It can be set up in the immediate aftermath of an attack or if an identified and non-localized terrorist group comes into action.
This level is set up for a limited period: the time of crisis management.
In particular, it makes it possible to ensure exceptional mobilization of resources, but also to disseminate information likely to protect citizens in a crisis situation.

As a reminder, around 9 a.m., a man attacked parishioners who were inside the Notre-Dame basilica, in the heart of Nice, a few days before the Catholic holiday of All Saints, with a stabbing weapon.
The sacristan of the basilica is notably one of the victims.
The assailant was arrested and is currently in the operating room.
