Usually, this restaurant is like its cuisine and the atmosphere that reigns there: bright, as Brazilians know how to be.

But Thursday evening, it was all the misfortune in the world that fell on this small establishment located close to the Promenade des Anglais.

A handful of relatives gathered there to honor the memory of Simone Barreto Silva, 44, their relative and friend who fell that very morning under the stab wounds of her murderer.

As she did regularly, Simone, very pious as her publications on social networks attest, had gone to meditate early at the Notre-Dame Basilica in Nice.

In the choir of the religious building, the faithful can then be counted on the fingers of one hand.

Vincent Loquès, the sacristan who watches over the place, has just opened the doors.

"A very nice and perfectionist man, always watching over each other to make sure everything goes well," boasts Robin, 85, an American who frequents the place regularly.

Notre-Dame Basilica, 8:29 am: the story of the attack on Nice

The attacker rushes inside, armed with a knife.

Vincent Loquès and a parishioner are killed.

Simone is stabbed several times by the terrorist, but manages to escape.

It is exactly 8:54 a.m. when, in a final burst, she crosses the rue d'Italie which adjoins the basilica.

Her path crosses that of two employees of the Isla Burger, located a few tens of meters away, who hasten to carry her inside.

It is Brahim Jelloule, the owner of the Burger, who recounted the scene: “My brother and the young person who works with us recovered it, explained the person concerned.

At the beginning, they did not understand anything.

She explained to them that there was someone inside the church.

The two men go there, and find themselves face to face with the assailant who threatens them.

In the process, the municipal police intervene and shoot him down.

"Tell my children that I love them"

Simone, she is medicalized on the spot by the emergency services, who will not be able to save her.

This mother dies 1h30 later, whispering her ultimate will to the medical staff: “Tell my children that I love them.

"Twenty-four hours later, Brahim really realizes what happened, sighs one of the relatives of the boss of the Burger.

He's not good at all.

"

Those of Simone, incredulous, are just as upset.

"Our priority is to preserve as much as possible his three children," blows an intimate, apologizing this Thursday morning for having to cut the conversation, because he is about to join a psychological reception unit.

In Nice, after the attack on the basilica, tears and anger

It is her friends who evoke the memory of Simone, “Moni”, as her sister Solange called her, who also lives in Nice.

The family is originally from the Salvador de Bahia region, where Simone was born.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has also paid tribute to the disappearance of this compatriot.

In Nice, the Barreto Silva family is perfectly integrated, becoming a figure of the small local Brazilian diaspora.

She was also known far beyond, in particular through her great involvement in the associative and cultural fabric.

Solange is thus one of the linchpins of Yemanja, an Afro-Brazilian deity celebrated every February 2, of which she had organized a Nice variation of the festivities.

“I don't believe it, loose between two sobs Marie-Joëlle, one of Simone's friends.

She was so sweet, kind, comely.

It was through her companion, a musician, that Marie-Joëlle got to know the Barreto Silva family.

“I often passed Simone in the avenue Jean-Médecin, not far from the basilica, and most of the time, it was she who recognized me, greeted me or came to exchange a few words.

This is terrible.

"

She was "always up for partying"

In 2017, Simone Barreto Silva joined the “stars and women” device.

"An operation launched initially in Marseille by chef Alain Ducasse," to "remove the obstacles to access to employment such as childcare or the issue of mobility.

Simone, along with eleven other women, had thrived there, obtaining her CAP in 2018.

“She was a life-loving woman, always happy,” described chef Eric Brujan, who had followed her.

Passionate about cooking, however, she worked as a carer for the elderly, juggling her job and her life as a mother.

In many photos and videos on Facebook, we see her attending the children's capoeira sessions, a Brazilian martial art of which Marcos, their cousin and nephew of Simone, is again a local figure.

“She was so radiant,” testified Myriam, another of her friends.

Always ready to party.

When we had finished dinner, it was always her who started the music.

To her children, her family, her friends and the people of Nice, it is her smile that she will leave, that she must leave.
