Goodbye to Intel: these are the first Macs with Apple Silicon processors

The new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac mini promise higher performance and lower consumption thanks to the M1 chip

A new era begins for Apple.

The Cupertino company presented its first computers with Apple Silicon processors, based on the ARM architecture and designed by the technology itself, on Tuesday.

The first chip of this type is called M1 and for now it will be incorporated into three devices: a MacBook Air, a Macbook Pro and the Mac Mini.

In this way, Apple says goodbye to Intel chips, based on the X86 architecture and for which it has been betting for the last 15 years, and now has greater control of the components of its devices.

Apple took advantage of the WWDC 2020 (Worldwide Developers Conference) in June to explain that it would stop relying on Intel processors.

In recent months it has also introduced the new iPad, Apple Watch, iPhone 12 and the HomePod Mini smart speaker.

Last week he announced with his now traditional “one more thing” that this Tuesday he would make an additional release.

Hours before the presentation began, as is also customary, the Apple store was closed and displayed the following message: “We will be back soon.

We are making some changes to the Apple Store.

Come by later. "

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, has been in charge of launching this virtual event: “It is time to talk about Macs. We love Macs. They are in our DNA.

It's the tool we use to build our phenomenal product line. "

The first to arrive has been the Apple M1.

It is Apple's first proprietary processor for Mac. Built with five-nanometer technology, this 16 billion-transistors, eight-core chip will soon be at the heart of some Apple computers.

The Cupertino company has ensured that the M1 offers more performance per watt than ever.

Specifically, it has claimed that it allows twice the performance of the most powerful chips in other laptops with a consumption one third less.

It is still too early to analyze the performance that Apple promises and if these chips will be able to keep up with the best processors from companies like Intel and AMD.

If so, the announcement could be a turning point for the apple company.

Apple has been perfecting its processors for years.

The result has been a scalable architecture designed for the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.

Based on this architecture, Apple has now designed its own chips for Mac. This architecture common to all of the brand's products will make it much easier for developers to program and optimize apps for the entire ecosystem, according to the company.

With this change, Apple takes another step in its strategy to distance itself from the competition and depend as little as possible on third parties.

Popular Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo estimates that the change will allow the company to save between 40% and 60% on the cost of its processors.

In addition, he insists that Apple would thus stop relying on Intel's roadmap to update its devices and saw it as a step forward to improve performance and differentiate itself more from Windows-based computers.

MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini

The first computer presented that incorporates this new processor is the Macbook Air, whose price starts at 1,129 euros.

Laura Metz, an Apple employee, has assured that the new MacBook Air is "faster than 98% of laptops sold last year."

While the CPU is 3.5 times more powerful than previous models, its SSD storage drive is up to two times faster.

In addition, this laptop has "the largest battery in a MacBook Air."

Apple promises up to 15 hours of web browsing autonomy and 18 hours of video playback.

The other laptop with Apple M1 presented this Tuesday has been the MacBook Pro, also 13 inches.

The tech giant promises nearly eight times the performance of the previous MacBook Pro and five times faster graphics.

And it even claims that this device is up to three times faster than the best-selling Windows laptop in its class.

The MacBook Pro also stands out for the battery: it is the most powerful that a Mac has ever had. In total, Apple promises up to 17 hours of autonomy to surf the Internet and 20 hours of video playback.

This laptop is available from 1,449 euros.

Apple has also renewed its compact desktop computers with the Mac mini, which will be available from 799 euros.

Julie Broms, an Apple employee, says that this device represents "a radical change in what an ultra-compact desktop computer can do."

The company claims that the CPU is three times faster than its predecessor and the graphics are six times more powerful.

Both the Mac Mini as well as the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro can be pre-ordered from this Tuesday and will begin shipping next week.

Although Apple has already presented its first own processor, the transition will not be immediate.

The technology company aims to complete it in approximately two years.

This does not mean that after that time the apple company will relegate computers with Intel processors to the background.

Apple ensures that in the coming years it will continue to offer support and launch new versions of macOS for Mac computers with Intel processors.
