With the Xbox Series X and S, the first consoles of the new generation are on the market.

They are significantly more powerful, smaller and quieter than their predecessors.

Nevertheless, the change doesn't feel like a revolution, but more like an evolution, just as every new generation of smartphones makes a lot better and faster, but there are no real surprises.

This text contains so-called affiliate links, through which the publisher, but never the author individually, receives a small commission from the dealer for sales.

This is probably also due to the fact that important exclusive launch titles for Xbox Series X and S such as "Halo Infinite" have been postponed until next year, and many more games will only appear in the coming months.

There is no reason to buy the console now.

The situation is not as dreary as it might seem at first glance.

Around 30 well-known titles have already been adapted to the new generation, with some new releases coming for both the old and the new consoles.

The versions for Series X and S already show very clearly which jumps are still possible, especially in terms of graphics.

We present the best games to launch the new models.

In-game history lesson: Assassin's Creed: Valhalla takes the time of the Vikings and lets the player explore Norway and later the British Isles.

Anyone who has already played an "Assassin's Creed" part knows the basic mechanics and the large, open and very real worlds.

The game appears in an optimized and improved version for the Xbox Series X and S and already shows how great games of the new generation can look.

Mud, puddles, dust: those who want to see special effects are in good hands at car races.

"Dirt 5" appears for Xbox Series X and S and is a classic racing game, in which the focus is less on realism and more on driving fun.

The races lead through Norwegian villages, over Greek mountain roads and on wide streets through New York and are always geared towards fun, speed and the flow of play.

The significantly better graphics of the new generation of consoles is particularly noticeable in the beautiful play of light and the little things.

"Dirt 5" by Codemasters, for Xbox Series X / S, also for Xbox One, Playstation 4 and 5 as well as PC, approx. 60 euros;

Gangster story meets nerd topics: In "Yakuza: Like a Dragon" the protagonist raves about "Dragon Quest" and is otherwise not very squeamish when people get across him.

Nevertheless: Despite the many fights, the game mainly focuses on the story, provides a very weird insight into the Japanese gangster world and creates short episodes that can be very funny, but also very sad.

It also looks very lively on the new generation of consoles.

"Yakuza 7: Like A Dragon" by Sega, for Xbox Series X / S, also for Xbox One, Playstation 4 (PS5 from March 2021), approx. 60 euros;

Ori is a small, white ghost creature with which players must explore a wonderfully designed fairy tale world, learn its secrets and protect it from danger.

In many moments this is magical and at the same time challenging.

One of the most beautiful games of the last generation has now become even more beautiful with many detail improvements and, above all, many lighting effects.

"Ori and the Will of the Wisps" from Microsoft, for Xbox Series X / S, also for Xbox One and Nintendo Switch (from December), approx. 20 euros, also included in the Xbox Game Pass;

"Tetris Effect Connected"

35 years of gaming history come together in "Tetris Effect Connected".

"Rez" inventor Tetsuya Mizuguchi designed this homage to the classic "Tetris".

The result is a visually and musically exuberant game that turns the flow of the game known as the Tetris Effect into a frenzy that never lets you stop.

For the Xbox Series X / S, on the one hand, the graphics have become even more opulent and better, and on the other hand, a multiplayer mode has been integrated with which you can solve the game together - or get drunk on it.

Great.

"Tetris Effect Connected" by Enhanced, for Xbox Series X / S, approx. 40 euros, also included in the Xbox Game Pass;

Big guns and chainsaws.

The "Gears of War" series takes up the "Doom" basic principle, goes from the first person perspective to the outside view and mixes that with steampunk and horror elements to an extremely fluid gameplay.

Although "Gears 5" already looked good on the last generation of consoles, the graphics and game fluidity of this Microsoft exclusive have once again been significantly improved.

"Gears 5" from Microsoft, for Xbox Series X / S, also for Xbox One and PC, approx. 40 euros, also included in the Xbox Game Pass;

"No Man's Sky"

Off into space: "No Man's Sky" caused a sensation when it was first released in 2016.

For one thing, because of its promise to allow players to explore each and every one of more than 18 trillion planets.

On the other hand, because of many things that did not work or were simply boring.

Four years later, the game is still huge, but thanks to ongoing development it is hardly recognizable and much more than what was promised earlier.

The different worlds live and can be explored on foot and with vehicles, the paths between the planets can be covered more quickly, and with the upgrade for the next generation of consoles, the game looks exactly as you always wanted it to.

"No Man's Sky" by Hello Games, for Xbox Series X / S, also for Xbox One, Playstation 4 and PC, approx. 30 euros, also included in the Xbox Game Pass;

Next to "Halo", "Forza" is the second exclusive showcase series for Microsoft's game studios.

"Forza Horizon 4" is already two years old, but the upgrade to the new generation makes you want to rediscover the game.

Even if you should be cautious about the term "photo-realistic", the world here looks almost perfect.

The surveillance state dystopia "Watch Dogs: Legion" is a game that falls short of its potential.

The story does not take its theme seriously, the protagonists can be replaced by any character in the game and are accordingly colorless, the gloomy London is more of a backdrop than a lively city.

And yet "Watch Dogs: Legion" is always a lot of fun.

For example, when you hack into networks and sneak into enemy bases.

On the Xbox Series X / S version you can clearly see the leap in quality of the new generation of consoles.

If the version released a good two weeks ago for the old generation of consoles looked good, the upgrade goes one better and lets hope for London rain again and again.

The puddles look spectacular!

With a leather coat, sword and gun, protagonist Dante fights his way game after game through levels occupied by demons and above all wants to look extremely good.

"Devil May Cry" is a Japanese series of games that put together set pieces of western myths into an incomprehensible, but always fascinating work.

In "Devil May Cry 5", London is the place where demons and monsters venture out of the earth.

This always looks excellent in the optimized Special Edition and plays well and smoothly even for beginners.
