Parents throw babies out of their hands (TIKTOK)

This week Tiktok launched new features designed to improve the protection of the safety of the children who are on the platform.

As is well known, Tiktok has managed to provoke quite a few storms with offensive, antisemitic content and more.

At this stage it is too early to determine whether it is a band-aid on a wound, or whether it is a real change.

But parental control that should and must be on all different platforms should not be underestimated.

"Using parental control is an educational choice of the parent. Parental control does not block the content, but only monitors it and informs the parents about it," said Orna Heilinger, director of Netika at the Israeli Internet Association.

"The active action should be yours as a parent - talk about it with the child, understand why he enters the sites or content he enters, deal with a boycott that is made on him or he does on someone else and so on. "It may be perceived by him as a violation of his privacy, and may impair his personal independent development. There is a clear correlation between the age of the child and the degree of follow-up, but monitoring of minor children may also affect their development and independence," she concluded.

Parental control on Facebook and Instagram

The huge social network Facebook requires children aged 13 and over to use various services like Facebook, Instagram and even WhatsApp, and it restricts users under the age of 18 with whom they can communicate from the moment they sign up.

For example, adults can not initiate messenger chats with minors who are not connected to them, and profiles of people under the age of 19 do not appear in search tools outside of Facebook, and do not have access to services like Marketplace, fundraising, dating, and more.

Facebook offers special account settings for teens, with the default content sharing being "friends only", and it maintains personal information, including contact information, school, or birthday that usually appears as public information.

Facebook has published a guide for parents to use the Facebook and Instagram platforms.

Tiktok: Improves parental control

In the new update, Tiktok will allow parents to manage their children's search options, whether they will be able to perform searches at all and if so, what content.

In addition, parents will be able to decide who is allowed to comment on their children's posts (everyone, friends, anyone), whether their children's account will be private and who will be exposed to videos that their children have marked as favorites.

So far, Tiktok has enabled screen time management, content limitation in For you and mailbox settings management.

Also, direct messages in the app are automatically disabled for users under the age of 16, only approved followers can send messages to each other and no photos and videos can be sent in the messages.

Discord: The chat platform of the gaming world

Discord service has become the popular communication service among gaming enthusiasts and professional gamers.

It is a kind of social network based on audio and chat intended for players.

But with the high popularity among minors, so does the danger from pedophiles and other dangers.

Discord makes it possible to block offensive content by scanning all incoming messages and stopping them if it is offensive content.

It should be noted that apparently the feature only works in the English language, so Israeli users are left without protection.

To activate the feature, go to settings, privacy and security, and select "Keep me safe".

More users can set that only friends of friends can add them as friends.

Amazon Twitch: A content streaming platform for gamers without parental controls

Twitch was acquired by Amazon and is in fact the largest gaming content streaming platform in the world.

Gamers from all over the world, including Israel, broadcast their games in real time, while they can be responded to and they sometimes also have a dialogue with the viewers.

However, Twitch does not offer any parental controls other than filtering offensive messages in chat within the platform.

Thus, in fact, it is not possible to limit children to viewing hours, nor to the type of content.
