The Ministry of Communications announced this morning (Thursday) that it is demanding that communications companies expand the coverage of the fourth generation network (4G) throughout the country significantly - from 75% to 95%.

The cellular companies have deprived the remote communities for years and have not invested efforts to promote the deployment of antennas, especially in the Negev and Golan Heights, and now they will be obliged to do so.

To speed up the process, the ministry will allow communications companies 120 sites where they can use each other for coverage, in order to encourage operators to retire in remote and sparsely populated areas where cellular coverage is more challenging and complex to implement.

"Connecting Israel is not just a slogan of the Ministry of Communications, but a practical obligation.

The state of communications infrastructure in Israel over the past decade has required immediate treatment, "said Communications Minister MK Yoaz Handel.

"Now is the time for repair. Residents of the Arava, the Galilee, the Negev and the Golan Heights are entitled to excellent cellular reception, as everywhere in the center. The settlements around the Israel are a national destination and therefore need advanced infrastructure and full cellular coverage."

"The purpose of the move is to improve and expand cellular coverage across the country, especially in areas that have not yet received cellular reception available," Handel added.

"If it was not clear until today then it is an essential service that contributes to quality of life and saving lives anywhere and anytime. The current reality is not acceptable and therefore requires a fundamental change."

Ministry of Communications Director General Liran Avishar Ben Horin also said that "the purpose of the move is Expand the overall level of coverage of all cellular networks, in which case companies will be required to expand the 4th generation network in localities, transportation routes, tunnels, and in open areas such as hiking areas, along with the possibility of spot retirement with another operator in a way that encourages companies to retire widely. And fast "

At the same time, the ministry is considering allowing cellular companies to voluntarily and in a limited and specific format provide coverage with the help of another operator in the following specific areas: Hermon, Hula Valley, Golan North, Golan High School, Golan South, Upper Galilee, Ayalon area, Yehiam area, Lower Galilee , Hatzor area, Carmiel area, Shefar'am area, Nazareth mountains, Ramat Kochav, Dead Sea area, northern Negev, southern Negev, Besor area and Arava area, as defined in the map of natural areas in the Central Bureau of Statistics' publications.

Spot coverage in this format will stand alongside the options currently available for passive sharing of sites and masts only, and for sharing networks in accordance with the firm's approved sharing policy, in order to expand the overall coverage of cellular networks and without compromising the quality of service provided to subscribers.
