Stop the anti-smog blocks in Piedmont.

Already today, November 20th.

The Minister of the Environment, Sergio Costa, accepted the request of the Region, which asked for the suspension in this phase of the health emergency of the blocks for Diesel euro 4 and 5, which were triggered in recent days with the increase in smog.

"The protection of air quality is an indispensable priority", observes the minister, convinced however that "in this critical phase, in order to reconcile all the interests involved, it is possible to postpone the terms for entry in force of the emergency traffic restriction measures ".

The Piedmont Region had raised the question "in order to limit the worsening of the health and socio-economic situation, which is already sufficiently critical", reads the letter sent to the Government on Tuesday, when with the increase in PM10 they entered measures in force in Turin and in another 25 Piedmontese municipalities.

The intentions of the Regions, to derogate from the measures defined in the Po Basin Agreement, the document continues, would have allowed "to avoid that the prescriptions related to the limitation of the use of public transport to 50% of the capacity, aimed at limiting the Covid infection19 reducing as much as possible the risks deriving from forms of gathering, and, at the same time, guaranteeing the necessary movements ".

The positive response of Minister Costa, who nevertheless asked for "the urgent activation of a technical table to share the initiatives to be adopted for the reduction of polluting emissions", is for Governor Cirio "a decision of common sense in a moment of emergency. already difficult for every citizen to face ".

"A fair measure that, as long as we are in the Red or Orange Zone, will not aggravate the inconvenience linked to the movement of people for reasons of work and necessity - adds the Regional Councilor for the Environment, Matteo Marnati -. Protecting air quality remains a priority of the Department of the Environment with measures to combat pollution ".

Convinced of the need to suspend the blocks also the mayor of Turin, Chiara Appendino, who in recent days had argued with the Region asking for a regulatory intervention, arrived this evening with the regional order following the ministry's ok.

"In this period of health emergency, the blocks must be temporarily suspended - says the first citizen -, while remaining aware of the absolute priority of the fight against smog, for Turin and for the country".
