The units that are still waging a hair-raising war against the Jeeps and crossovers

The second or third sentence Joel told me that day pretty much summed up what we think of these cars, "no doubt, no matter what happens at the end of the day, I take each of them according to a crossover or Gippon at that price."

And to be honest it's just right, except for one or two purple units with some added value like the Toyota Rav4 Hybrid or the Subaru Forester that allow for moderate space capabilities - all the other members of this group are mostly a pile of flaws and compromises.

The new models coming to showrooms

To the full article

In terms of vehicle dedication data in Israel, Europe, the United States and in fact around the world, we seem to be becoming a minority.

And within the minority that continues to buy regular cars rather than elevated-stations-minus-usability-plus-fuel-consumption, those who buy large family cars have dwindled even more.

From a multi-competitor category, more and more tired representatives are left here due to the force of inertia (Volkswagen Passat, Subaru B4, Chevrolet Malibu) than from fresh and hungry competitors (the excellent but very expensive Peugeot 508).

Add to that a "green tax" policy that out of concern for the yolk blossoms causes the tax to go up on green cars, and a preference for polluting and cheap cars over them - and you have every reason to see a great camaraderie category.

Superb has a solid and clean design, the sonata uses every trick in the book

Find the trick

And in all this not-so-simple atmosphere, two cars have managed in recent years to impress both on the road, both in the showrooms and in the used market - Hyundai Sonata and Skoda Superb.

It is interesting to see that their two strongest cards from time immemorial, the first with fuel consumption and instrumentation and the second with quality and usability, are the ones they are good to play with here as well, even today.

Hyundai Sonata stands the test in the equipped trim level Limit and at a price of NIS 196,000, it also has the premium finish level at NIS 182,000.

Skoda Superb is taking the test at the Style trim level (the second of its four trim levels) at a price of NIS 212,000.

This level of finish also comes with the 1.5-liter engine with 150 hp and a price of 199 thousand shekels.

Road test: The revamped Skoda Superb

To the full article

At Hyundai you will find a rich atmosphere, the list of equipment is very long

The gaps between the two begin even in their outward appearance.

You will decide what you want according to your taste, but one thing is clear, these two cars are two completely different approaches.

While the Superb is understated, stately, with heavy and clean lines, the designers at Hyundai have not left a single trick in designing a car that has not been used here.

From the huge grill, the signature of the unique lighting on the front, the carving of every piece of tin in it to the sculpted tail.

So beauty is a matter of taste, but it is clear with whom the lights were on until a later hour in the studio.

Both cars offer long, very long equipment lists, which you can find in detail on the importers' websites.

We will concentrate on the relevant gaps.

At Superb, the design is clean and versatile, and the quality of the materials is excellent

The atmosphere in both cabins will definitely allow the buyer to release a sigh of pleasure as he looks around.

Let’s start with the sonata, the handsome cabin combining the materials, textures and finish gives a sense of richness all around.

The same is true in Superb, although here the design language is more functional.

In both, the quality of the materials is mixed, ranging from pleasant greetings to places where the hands reach frequently and the level of difficulty increases as the hands go down and move away to the far corners of the passenger compartment.

Skoda has a slight advantage in this aspect, when at some point the quality of the plastic stabilizes.

Less comfortable buttons and top view

Both have a digital dashboard, in both it is rich in colors and exchanges views in an impressive graphic display.

In Czech he speaks Hebrew, in Korean data on the windshield will be projected.

The multimedia screens are also the same size, 8 inches, will be able to communicate with Apple and Android devices, again the Czech knows Hebrew but has another advantage - the quality and sharpness of the display is better than that of the Korean.

Audiophiles?

The audio system of the BOSE sonata may wink at you.

Even the rudders present a similar approach, their structure abandoning the configuration of the three spokes in favor of two - the advantage - it allows the poor driving position of a nonchalantly placed hand on the bottom of the steering wheel - Poya Skoda, Poya Hyundai.

Full menus in Hebrew and excellent human engineering

Following the same functional design approach, human engineering and operation in the Skoda is simpler and more convenient.

Starting with the arrangement of the buttons on the steering wheel, the size of the buttons in climate control and ending with the operation of the systems in the center console arranged on both sides of the gear lever and not in a file like Hyundai, where buttons change the gear lever and allow space between seats.

Both cars have wireless charging for mobile, peripheral cameras, leather upholstery, sunroofs, electric and heated seats.

The thing is that in this armature ping pong, the Sonata goes a few steps further with things like remote propulsion, integral buttons for opening gates or parking lots, and although both have officially very long safety systems, Hyundai also has a rear seat warning in case of a passing vehicle before opening a door, counter warning Forgetting children in the car, displaying the area next to the car on the dashboard with the turn on the signal (this is more of a gimmick than a life-saving system, but Schwinn, we will not say no to another safety system).

Good legroom, less impressive headroom, single USB socket

The transition to the back seat starts with the Sonata, the entrance is not really convenient - the price of its exterior design, the upholstery is good, there are curtains in the rear windows, the bulge in the floor that should usually accommodate a non-obstructive drive channel and no legroom, air conditioning and USB socket.

Then move on to the Superb, and not only does this car have the wonder of a rear seat, it just hits the Sonata Shank on the thigh.

The entry sticks and headroom, the upholstery quality in the doors, the huge legroom (although the two cars have the same wheelbase of 284 cm), the outward visibility, control of the passenger seat from the back seat, separate climate control, two USB Type C sockets and a 230V socket, suddenly even The more prominent propulsion channel is idle in the sixties.

Knockout in the back seat thanks to the space, quality of materials, separate climate control and electrical outlets

In the trunk the story is similar, the Sonata has 510 liters and that means a large compartment.

However its opening is relatively small due to the structure of the door and high.

It is devoid of anchor points, hanging hooks or compartments.

Superb has not only more volume (584 liters) but also an electric opening (even without contact), a much larger opening and unparalleled loading ease in the industry, hanging solutions, storage, compartments, a 12V socket and more.

Hyundai has a large, deep and simple trunk

In the city and in the village

In terms of propulsion systems, these two cars present the two leading approaches today in the field of propulsion.

From Europe comes to us the choice of a small (relatively) engine, supercharged turbo mated to a dual-clutch gearbox to produce an efficient car and reduced pollutant emissions.

The Korean-American approach in the Sonata is to use a gasoline engine to which an electric unit is attached to produce a combination of available and clean low-power electric power and a high-speed efficient gasoline engine, both of which are mated to a planetary automatic transmission and gearbox mechanism. The debut of the car).

In the Skoda you will find everything good, from the volume, for ease of use to the options for hanging and anchoring

And after all that, the numbers: Skoda Superb with 190 hp at 4,200 rpm and 32.6 kg at 1,500 rpm.

Hyundai Sonata with 192 hp at 6,000 rpm and 37.5 kg at 1,770 rpm.

And after the numbers, the reality: first of all the two cars drive great, both powerful, fast with power reserves that you will not worry about it.

The character of the Sonata is more relaxed in the transfer of power while the Superb gives a sense of agility.

But not just a feeling, all the acceleration tests had a consistent pattern, first few meters where the sonata leaps forward courtesy of the speed of the power supply and the delay of the robotic gearbox in the Superb and then the Superb suddenly lifts its skirt and knocks a sprint towards the horizon.

At intermediate accelerations, it took the Sonata gearbox a little longer to respond to throttle pressure, a time the Superb took advantage of to quickly flip to the appropriate gear, pile up engine to engine and disappear forward.

Driving comfort is significantly superior in the Sonata

In terms of comfort both cars provide excellent levels of refinement and insulation.

On the side road where we examine comfort you can find in a relatively short space cell any hazard known to mankind.

Cracks, potholes, waves, fragments, battalions, shell craters, asphalt fragments, patches and coalition agreements.

Both cars moved our buttocks majestically over the business.

But one of them did it a little better and that was the sonata.

Its basic softness is better, the dampers made it vibrate less on breaks, the 17-inch rims (18 in the Superb) were more forgiving of handling the small disturbances and the noise isolation was better.

These two non-small cars work out quite well in cities, the Superb requires less time to get used to its dimensions compared to the Sonata which requires a longer adjustment time to the thicker front beams and the "American" look on the driver's side with its excessive object magnification.

The Superb is more agile and dynamic

These two cars are also great companions for long-distance cruises at high speeds, but each has its own flaw.

In the Sonata these are wind noises from the mirrors in the speed range 110-120 km / h, in the Superb these are tire noises and wind noises join at 140-150 km / h and north.

On the winding road the Sonata is very impressive in itself and certainly compared to the outgoing generation.

It can be loaded with side forces and make turns quickly and with high confidence, its sport mode accelerates the responses of the gearbox and sharpens the responsiveness of the engine.

But she has no real chance against the Czech locomotive called the Superb.

The whole business here seems to be tightened in a few clicks.

The body roll control, the accuracy of pressing the brakes (in the absence of a regenerative system of hybrid cars), the willingness to change direction decisively and the general feeling that the whole business is moving together and more cohesive.

Make no mistake - both are not fun to drive, and the ability to factor in a winding road is irrelevant to 99 percent of buyers, but we have said it before and we will say it again.

A car that changes direction will do it on the road that goes down because of a fence and will do it when a steel pipe weighing tens of tons will fall from the truck in front of you on road 6.

Curves and a very extroverted appearance

Fuel consumption, it will not surprise anyone, has consistently and clearly stood in favor of the Sonata.

It does not matter if it was in the administrative (but fast) episode where she went 17.5 km per liter compared to 13.7 in the Superb or in the test summary after many dynamic driving episodes and algae tests. There in the last measurement the difference was the same - 15.8 km per liter in the Sonata and 11.8 in the Superb .

Respected and heavy in the stately and restrained performance of Superb

Product and deal

We hate such tests.

In them the cars are great and we sit chatting over another cup of coffee and another one who is the better car.

Give us a clear decision with a clear winner, make our lives easy.

But thank God we live in the reality of great cars also from two such popular brands.

The Skoda Superb is the better product of the two, period.

The gearbox package, the quality, the assembly, the human engineering, the usability, the road behavior, in all these sections it comes out with a knockout.

The Sonata provides better ride comfort, significant fuel savings and more comfort and safety equipment.

The sonata also wins this test.

We were lucky that we were torn between two such excellent cars

And a moment before you do not understand what it is like, and that it could not be that the better car lost, let's say now and let it be clear, if life were a choice according to the characteristics we have mentioned so far only - the result would have been different.

But here also comes the matter of price.

Remember, NIS 196,000 in the Sonata and NIS 212,000 in the Superb (214 in the specific test car), now, NIS 16,000 is quite a bit of money and again, the Skoda is better, but in our opinion not by such a gap.

Add to that a 5-year warranty on the Hyundai (and a 7-year warranty on the hybrid system) compared to a two-year Skoda and here is a result in which the better car does not necessarily win.

Is the better product the better deal?

But this confrontation is not over, far from it.

In about a month and a half, the new green tax formula will be published. If Colmobil were not able to find a patent and prevent the expected rise in the price of the Sonata, business would be completely different.

The next turning point in the plot, the arrival of the Superb iV Plug-in Hybrid during the next year that will shuffle the cards again.

So this confrontation is over, but the struggle is not really over.
