Laschet for new concepts in the corona pandemic

06.17 a.m.:

North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) calls for new concepts in the corona pandemic from January.

"Society and the economy will not hold out for another year like this," Laschet told the Rheinische Post.

From the turn of the year, "smart concepts should enable long-term prospects for living with the pandemic," he said.

"With the vaccine approved, these concepts are realistic."

Laschet went on to say: "We cannot shut everything down forever, and the state pays billions in losses month after month. A new model will be necessary from the new year. Permanent closings and subsequent compensation payments will destroy the state in the long run."

RKI: More than 11,000 new infections and 125 more deaths

05.55 a.m.:

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reports an increase in positive tests in Germany by 11,169 to over 1.053 million.

Last Monday the number was 10,864.

The day before, 14,611 had been reported.

The numbers are comparatively low on Sundays and Mondays because, according to the RKI, fewer samples are taken on the weekend and therefore fewer tests are carried out overall.

The previous high was reached on Friday a week ago (November 20th) with 23,648 reported cases.

The German health authorities also reported 125 new deaths within 24 hours.

The trend in the number of daily deaths had recently gone up, which was also expected after the steep increase in new infections.

The total number of people who died with or with a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to a total of 16,248.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the RKI has counted a total of 1,053,869 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany (as of November 30, 00:00).

It is estimated that around 739,100 people have now recovered.

According to the RKI management report on Sunday, the so-called seven-day R-value was 0.95 (previous day: 0.96).

This means that 100 infected people infect 95 more people.

The value represents the occurrence of the infection 8 to 16 days ago.

If the value is below 1 for a longer period of time, the infection rate subsides.

Survey: more housework due to the

corona

pandemic

04.41 a.m.:

More than 40 percent of people in Germany complain about an increase in housework due to the corona pandemic.

That emerges from a representative survey published on Monday by the polling institute Forsa on behalf of the mini-job center.

Many respondents complained that there are more dirty dishes because people eat more often at home, and that they also have to be cleaned more often.

Families with children were particularly burdened by the pandemic.

Even three quarters of those surveyed complained of overtime - not least because of the more frequent childcare in their own four walls.

At least nine percent of those surveyed said that the pandemic made them more aware that housework was fun.

It was more often men than women who had this experience.

Flat shares are becoming more expensive - despite the pandemic

3:00 a.m.:

Despite the Corona crisis, rooms in shared apartments have become more expensive for students: On average, the room rent in Germany's university cities was last EUR 400 per month, which is EUR 11 more than last year.

That comes from an analysis of the portal wg-gesucht.de and the Berlin Moses Mendelssohn Institute (MMI), which the AFP news agency received on Monday.

According to its own information, the institute examined the flat share prices in all 97 German university cities with at least 5,000 students.

Accordingly, the rent in Munich is the highest at an average of 650 euros;

Behind it are cities like Berlin and Hamburg, each with around 500 euros.

"In the ten university locations with the most strained housing markets, housing costs of over 500 euros can now be expected," explained the MMI - that affects a total of 775,000 students.

According to the WHO, the number of malaria deaths could rise dramatically

02.45 a.m.:

Because of the corona pandemic, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), there could be tens of thousands of additional deaths from malaria this year.

Depending on how severely the malaria health services have been disrupted because of the pandemic, there could be between 20,000 and 100,000 more malaria deaths than expected, most of them children, said Pedro Alonso, head of the malaria program at the WHO.

According to a WHO report published on Monday, around 409,000 people worldwide died of malaria in 2019, most of them in Africa.

Braun: "Pandemic will lose its horror in the next year"

1:20 a.m.:

Chancellery Minister Helge Braun is optimistic about the coming year in the Corona crisis.

"The pandemic will lose its horror next year," said the CDU politician to the "Handelsblatt" (Monday).

“As a society, we have to stick to December and the months up to March by observing the AHA rules and reducing our contacts.

Where that is not enough, cuts are inevitable.

Then spring will come and hopefully the vaccine too. "

It has been possible to stop the exponential growth in the number of infections at a level that challenges the health system, but does not just overwhelm it.

But 400 deaths a day are too many.

"That's why I would have liked to have made more far-reaching decisions in October."

Nevertheless, despite the billions in government aid, Braun expects major damage to the German economy.

"The corona crisis will leave a significant mark on the economy," said Braun.

The state can help so that the majority of companies get through the crisis.

"But it will not remain without consequences." Braun believes that another stimulus package for the coming summer is possible.
