Chinese technology maker Shiomi has overtaken Apple and become the third largest cellular company in the world, according to a report by the American research company Gartner, which published cellular sales for the third quarter of 2020. Samsung is in first place, with 80.8 million units sold.
Shiomi managed to jump from 32.9 million devices in the previous year (8.5% of the market) to 44.4 million in the last quarter.
In second place is Huawei, with 51.8 million units, although it was a difficult year that included an American boycott by the Trump administration.
In fourth place, as mentioned, is Apple with 40.5 million units, and in fifth place is Chinese OPPO with 29.8.
A total of 366 million units of smartphones were sold in the third quarter of 2020 - a decrease of 5.7 percent compared to the same period last year.
However, Gartner notes that this is an improvement in the data, as in the first and second quarters of the year - with the outbreak of the plague in China affecting factories and production lines - there was a 20 percent decline.
And what is the reason for Shiomi's leap?
First, the popularity of its biggest competitor, Wawi, is declining.
Another factor is the delay in the announcement of the iPhone 12 series, and the late arrival of the devices in stores.
Sales were not included in the final results of the third quarter, and therefore this is also the reason for the Chinese manufacturer's victory.
