Violent hazing among Paris firefighters: several increased prison sentences on appeal

The Paris Court of Appeal on Friday increased most of the prison sentences, including a farm, imposed on five former Paris firefighters tried for violence and sexual assault on two colleagues during a hazing in 2012, we have learned from a judicial source.

Only a reduced sentence

The two plaintiffs and the defendants were part of the prestigious gymnastics team of the Paris fire brigade (BSPP), which had been dissolved following this case.

The Court of Appeal increased, from 10 to 18 months and from 5 to 12 months, the suspended prison sentences of two other defendants tried for violence, and confirmed the three-month suspended sentence imposed on another for non- prevention of an offense.

On the other hand, it reduced to 8 months suspended sentence of the one of the five who had been the most heavily condemned at first instance (12 months including four closed).

During the appeal trial, completed on November 12, the Advocate General had requested 18 months in prison, 6 of which was closed for the first ex-firefighter prosecuted for sexual assault and 15 months, 5 of which was closed for the second.

She had estimated that the five defendants had "still not realized the seriousness" of the violence.

The BSPP has been targeted in recent years by several judicial inquiries into acts of rape, sexual assault and sexual harassment.
