For the Minister of Health Olivier Véran, there are “too many cases of Covid” on a daily basis, even if it is too early to speak of an “epidemic outbreak”.

On the eve of a Christmas with a high risk of contamination, the Covid-19 epidemic is still circulating actively in France.

The virus claimed 278 victims in 24 hours in hospital on Wednesday, December 23, against 386 the day before and 354 on Monday, according to Public Health France.

This brings the total number of deaths since the start of the epidemic to 61,978.

14,929 new cases of Covid-19 were also reported on Wednesday, a figure up from 11,795 the day before.

Last week, the number of new positive cases recorded each day fluctuated between 12,000 and 18,000.

"

There are too many cases on a daily basis, more than 10,000 cases, while we wanted to fall below 5000 to regain control over the chains of contamination

", noted the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran, Tuesday evening on TF1 .

But "

we are not in an epidemic outbreak

," he added.

The number of Covid-19 patients currently being treated in intensive care continues to decline very slowly, with 2,701 patients (including 200 admitted in the past 24 hours) against 2,719 on Tuesday, the health agency's database said.

At the peak of the second wave on November 16, more than 4,900 patients had been identified in intensive care.

A total of 24,852 people with the disease are currently hospitalized, with 1,426 new admissions in 24 hours.

The positivity rate (proportion of positive tests compared to the total number of tests) continues to fall, however, and has fallen to 4.3% against 4.4% on Tuesday and 5.2% on Sunday.

This key indicator stood at 6.4% on December 8, when a new accounting method was introduced.

The first vaccines against Covid-19 will be administered on Sunday in France, the government announced on Monday after the green light from the European Medicines Agency for the vaccine developed by the American Pfizer and the German BioNTech.

The French strategy plans to vaccinate as a priority the elderly in nursing homes and the workers of these residences presenting risk factors, that is to say approximately 1 million people.
