The number of tampons made in Italy has almost halved in the last month compared to November, going from about 1.5 million per week to just over 900,000.

This is indicated by the analysis of the data conducted by physicist Giorgio Sestili on the science communication network "giorgiosestili.it".

The data is confirmed by the virologist Francesco Broccolo, of the University of Milan Bicocca and director of the Cerba laboratory in Milan.

"It is a very important decline, which can be positive if linked to the fact that the contagion curve is lowered, since if fewer people have symptoms there is less demand, but it is negative if we see the ratio between positive cases and tampons, as is happening these days ", observes Sestili.

In fact, yesterday this ratio reached 14.9%, as had not happened since 23 November, while the ratio between positive cases and cases tested (i.e. the number of swabs net of those made several times to the same person) reached 36 %, "by far the highest value of the second wave".

This, according to the physicist, could mean that "only the symptomatic are swabs".

That tracing has "drastically reduced" is also noted by Broccolo, for which compared to November the number of tampons has dropped on average from over 200,000 to 150,000 per day.

"Until a month ago - he observed - there were more swabs, while now after 21 days of isolation, positive asymptomatic people no longer swab because they are considered non-contagious".

From the same period, moreover, "the number of positives weighed mainly on the new cases and not the swabs made over time".

Thirdly, he added, the increased use of rapid swabs weighs heavily, "which has greatly contributed to the reduction of the molecular swab".

For a complete monitoring, which gives indications both of the course of the infection and of the contagion, according to Broccolo more swabs with evaluation of the viral load are needed, at least in asymptomatic cases that end the isolation although still positive.
