Even if the victims have not yet been identified, the referral to the Specialized Interregional Jurisdiction (JIRS) of Marseille, "in view of the operating mode used", leaves little doubt on the preferred avenue after the discovery on Tuesday morning of two bodies charred in a car near the city of Marseille: a new settling of scores linked to drug trafficking.

Shortly before five in the morning, the CRS of the motorway platoon called by motorists for a burning vehicle discovered it in flames under the A55 motorway, on a service road in the town of Pennes-Mirabeau.

After extinguishing the fire, the police found two completely charred bodies inside, one in the trunk, the other in the passenger seat.

The Aix-en-Provence prosecutor's office initially seized charged the PJ with the investigation before quickly transmitting the file to JIRS.

"These facts seem to fall within the realm of traditional Marseilles crime", notes the prosecutor of the Republic of Aix-en-Provence, Achille Kiriakides.

One of the signatures of local drug traffickers

"As it stands, the identification of the victims could not be carried out, an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact causes of death and collect the first elements of identification", indicates the Marseille prosecutor's office.

If the shooting death before the fire of the vehicle was not yet confirmed on Tuesday, which nevertheless presents itself as a probable double settlement of accounts would bring the number of victims to twelve in 2020 in the Marseille region.

Sinisterly nicknamed the “Marseille barbecue”, the execution of rivals followed by the setting on fire in a car is one of the signatures of local drug traffickers.

The quiet town of Pennes-Mirabeau has often been the setting for such macabre discoveries in the past.

Already at Christmas 2011, three charred bodies had been discovered there in an Audi A3 parked in the pine forest.

Identified, the perpetrators of this triple murder, a rival gang of victims, had been sentenced to terms ranging from 10 to 25 years of criminal imprisonment.

If no shootings in the area were reported on the night of the gruesome killing, investigators will have to determine, among other things, whether the two victims were killed on the spot or if the vehicle was moved before to be set on fire.
