It just sounds dramatic:

the social network announced last night (Wednesday) that as part of a redesign of Facebook pages, it is removing the likes counter - one of the most recognizable features on the platform, in order to focus only on followers.

So far, users have been presented with two masses - side by side, which has caused some confusion.

According to Facebook, the number of followers of a page reflects the number of people who receive updates and alerts from the same page, thus providing webmasters with a better understanding of the scope of their audience.

"We are deleting the likes and moving to focus on the number of followers," the company's official blog said.

"Unlike likes, followers represent the people who can get updates from pages, which gives a better indication of the audience of followers."

Alongside this, the pages will get a new and convenient design for the page interfaces, a dedicated news feed that allows people to find new conversations and join them, follow trends and keep in touch with colleagues and fans.

In addition, Facebook will also include new page management tools - including giving full or partial access to page administrators, along with new security features capable of monitoring spam, impersonating profiles and phishing attempts.

In case you were wondering, the new updates will be launched gradually to all Facebook pages over the next few months, which means you will not be surprised if you can soon make a "follow" to replace "I liked".
