WhatsApp Darkness Mode (PR)

WhatsApp for users: Confirm the new terms of use or the account will be deleted.

Last month it was reported that Facebook was going to announce the move, and it is now being implemented.

Facebook's move is being carried out against the background of investigations in the United States and fears of harm to competition and its monopoly.

Under the new agreement, the information coming from WhatsApp will be shared with the other platforms owned by Facebook, with the change taking place on February 8th.

WhatsApp was acquired by Facebook in 2014 for $ 19 billion, and in recent years has embedded end-to-end encryption, a move that seems like a victory over privacy.

However, in 2016 it allowed users to voluntarily share some of the information, and pass it on to Facebook.

However, as of February 8, users will no longer have a choice, and the WhatsApp messaging app will do just that, except for users who will not agree to the new terms of use, and will have to part with the platform.

Among the information that will be shared from February 8 can be found: phone numbers, contacts stored in the smartphone, profile names, profile pictures, status messages and information such as when were last seen, information used for diagnostics such as device type, WhatsApp version, and more.

"As part of Facebook's family of friends, WhatsApp receives information and shares information with this family of friends," the new privacy policy said.

"We may use the information we receive from other companies in the family and vice versa. The move is designed to help operate, deliver, improve, understand, personalize, support and market our services and their offerings," they concluded.

As mentioned, this is a somewhat puzzling timing move, as 48 states along with the Federal Trade Commission have filed a lawsuit against the company, which deals with the problematic acquisition of several companies including WhatsApp and Instagram, by Facebook.

One of the demands in the lawsuit may be that the social networking giant will be forced to sell the companies.

The move may have been designed to assimilate WhatsApp within Facebook, in such a way that the social networking giant could not be dismantled.
