Vaccinations
The vaccination campaign against the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus began in Germany at the end of December.
Hundreds of thousands of people have received one vaccine dose so far.
The responsible Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reports daily on the progress.
It currently reports:
So far, only the corona vaccine from Biontech and Pfizer has been administered in Germany, the vaccine from Moderna is expected to be added soon.
Both preparations have in common that they only develop their full effectiveness after the second vaccination.
With the Biontech vaccine there is three weeks between the two vaccinations, with Moderna four weeks.
The federal states are progressing at different speeds with the administration of the first vaccine doses.
It is still unclear whether a vaccination only prevents the outbreak of the lung disease Covid-19 or also the infection with the virus.
The latter is the prerequisite for so-called herd immunity to be achieved with enough vaccinated people.
This means that the coronavirus can then only spread to a very limited extent and even unvaccinated people are largely protected.
Researchers assume that herd immunity can be achieved for coronavirus with a vaccination rate of around 60 to 70 percent - provided the vaccination also prevents transmission.
So far, only a five-digit number of vaccination doses is administered daily in Germany.
There are several reasons for this: there are initial delivery problems, not all vaccination centers have started their full operation yet, and among the first to be eligible for vaccination are many older people who cannot be vaccinated in a vaccination center but have to be visited by a mobile vaccination team.
The vaccination ordinance regulates which groups of people are entitled to vaccinate and when.
Accordingly, it is the turn of the over-80s, people in old people's and nursing homes, their nursing staff and medical staff, for example in intensive care units.
At the same time as Germany, the vaccination campaign began in other EU countries.
Other states have approved corona vaccines earlier or have since started vaccinating.
The Our World in Data project is currently reporting worldwide:
In relation to the size of the population, the vaccination campaign in Israel is particularly advanced.
