"We recently updated the terms of our privacy policy, and received a lot of questions. Alongside a number of rumors, we wanted to answer some of the most popular answers we received."

This is what WhatsApp wrote in a blog post on the company's website.

It seems that the change in policy that will take place in February has caused a wave of departures of WhatsApp users, out of a justified concern for privacy.

Among the alternatives are Signal and Telegram, which have enjoyed a significant increase in the number of users in the past week.

Thus, for example, Signal became the most popular app in the United States.

"We want to emphasize that the new policy does not affect the privacy of messages with friends or family in any way," WhatsApp clarified.

So how does the new policy affect you?

"We can not see your private messages, hear the calls nor Facebook," the message clarified.

WhatsApp stressed that everything shared on the platform is not transmitted to it, and that the information is personal and protected by end-to-end encryption.

"We will never take advantage of security, and we make it clear that every call is encrypted from end to end."

WhatsApp further clarified that it does not store data of messages or voice calls made, such as call history, to whom messages were sent or to whom you called WhatsApp and how long Szman extended the call.

"While traditional cellular operators store the information, we believe that the storage of the information poses a risk to privacy and security, and we do not."

In a long document, she went on to detail WhatsApp because it also cannot see the users' location.

"That you share your location on WhatsApp, it remains encrypted from end to end."

Referring to the contacts, she wrote: "When you give us permission to the contacts, we do not share them with other Facebook services", and that the WhatsApp groups are also private, and the information is not transmitted to Facebook for the purpose of personal advertisements.

What information is exposed?

Correspondence with business users

Many companies in Israel and around the world have launched support for WhatsApp and it has a price: privacy.

"Every day millions of people around the world communicate securely on WhatsApp with businesses of all sizes. Correspondence with businesses is different from correspondence with family and friends. Large companies use hosting servers to manage their communications, which is why we offer companies secure hosting servers," wrote WhatsApp.

However, there are also companies that choose to use other servers, which may put the information at risk.

"If you communicate with businesses by phone, email or WhatsApp, businesses can use the information for marketing purposes, including Facebook postings. To make sure you are aware of this, we emphasize business calls made on Facebook's servers," they added.

Even if you have reviewed products sold on a business profile, Facebook may use the information to offer you the same products on Facebook and Instagram.

And what about Signal?

In Signal, the platform that has been gaining momentum over the past week continues to make it clear that they do not share information, and that no message or metadata (phone type, operating system, version) is transmitted to them.

They also stressed that the only information that was saved was the phone number, but they were working on a method to encrypt this information as well.
