General Motors EV1 Destruction under Police Security (Photo: Manufacturer's Website)
On January 23, 2006, 14 years ago, the documentary "Who Killed the Electric Car?" Premiered.
The premise of the film, directed by Chris Payne, is that the automotive industry, oil companies and the federal government have teamed up in a conspiracy to thwart the success of the electric car, specifically General Motors' EV1.
The EV1 introduced in 1996 was an electric car marketed in only two states - California and Arizona, it was not traditionally sold and in its three years of production it was delivered under a leasing agreement to users.
After 2,500 units of it circulated on the roads, in 2003 General Motors announced that it would not continue its leasing contracts and intended to collect all the cars.
The official reason was high production and maintenance costs, the unofficial reason raised in the film - a plot to "kill" the electric car before it is discovered that this solution is feasible and feasible on a daily basis.

Forty cars were donated to museums and classrooms, after their propulsion systems were shut down so they could not return to the road.
In fact except for a few units, the entire EV1 car was destroyed, by the way, one of which found its way not through the basements of Opel's storage site in Brussels Germany, where it was hidden for years.
So in honor of 14 years of film, we dedicate our weekly trivia to the electric car that is still with us.
