Since the pandemic began a good year ago, the number of corona infections detected worldwide has risen to more than 100 million.
That came out on Tuesday from data from the US University of Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.
Only about a month ago, on Boxing Day, the threshold of 80 million infections was exceeded.
The number of known deaths related to the virus is now more than 2.1 million.
Experts assume that there are high unreported numbers of both infections and deaths worldwide.
The website of the US university is regularly updated with in-depth data and shows a higher level than the official figures of the World Health Organization (WHO).
In some cases, however, the numbers have also been revised downwards.
With a good 25 million, most of the confirmed infections are in the USA, a country with around 330 million inhabitants.
There are also more confirmed deaths there than in any other country: more than 423,000.
Around 10.7 million infections have now been detected in India and 8.8 million in Brazil.
In Europe, most infections so far have been reported in Great Britain (3.7 million), followed by France (3.1 million) as well as Spain (2.6 million) and Italy (around 2.5 million).
According to Johns Hopkins, 2.16 million infections were registered in Germany.
