The Israeli actress Chaya Hararit, who starred in the international film "Ben Hur" alongside Charlton Heston in 1959 and was one of the first actresses to have real Hollywood success, passed away this morning at her home in Buckinghamshire, England.

She was 89 at the time of her death.

Her niece, Tamar Tessler, tells Walla!

A culture that Harari died this morning in her sleep.

Ashes will be scattered in the country.

Hararit was born in 1931 in Haifa as Chaya Neuberg to two immigrants from Poland, and served in the Navy.

She has performed in the Cameri Theater, including the plays "Queen of Sheba", "Call Me Siomke" and "The Italian Straw Hat".

In 1954 she was photographed for the film "A Stone on Every Mill" directed by Aryeh Lahula and written by Haim Hefer, but it was eventually not distributed to the cinema.

In 1955, she was cast in the Israeli-English film "Hill 24 Doesn't Answer" directed by Thorwald Dickinson, which won a commendation mark from the Cannes Film Festival.

In 1956 she moved to Rome, and later starred in Francesco Mazelli's Girl of the Day.

She was later cast in the cinematic epic "Ben Hur" by Jewish-American director William Weiler, which is considered the American film with the largest budget to date.

Beside her played Charlton Heston.

Hararit, who played Esther, Ben Hur's lover, is the first Israeli to be signed to a four-year contract by one of the main Hollywood studios (MGM).

"Ben Hur" was a huge success and won 11 Oscars.

Despite this tremendous breakthrough into consciousness and the contract with MGM, Hararit was unable to continue the success.

The following films in which she participated in the early 1960s did not come close to the success of "Ben Hur" - including "The Secret Partner", "Queen of Atlantis" and "The Interns".

Later in the 1960s she retired from acting and moved to England with her partner, English director Jack Clayton, who died in 1995.

She co-wrote the screenplay for the 1967 film Our Mother's House.
