The accident occurred in Ariège, on the heights of Port de l'Hers, near the village of Massat.

The victim was part of a group of five hikers who took a route without much difficulty, according to the high mountain gendarmerie platoon (PGHM) of Savignac-les-Ormeaux.

"He moved away from the rest of the group"

"When passing a valley, he moved away from the rest of the group to take a shaded part, he slipped from 100 to 150 meters and hit a rock," said Major Jean-Marc Galin, emphasizing that the snow was very hard in the shaded areas.

France Bleu adds that he could not be revived after his accident.

The radio recalls that a hiker who was in the same area has been missing for two weeks.

At the end of January, in the Hautes-Pyrénées, a 66-year-old man was killed by an avalanche, near the ski resort of Luz Ardiden.

The ski lifts and the downhill ski slopes being closed, the practice of ski touring has developed strongly this winter, and the gendarmerie calls for the greatest caution.
