Snow in New York: Manhattan on Ice

Manhattan from above: Half a meter of fresh snow within a few hours

As if someone had scattered huge amounts of powdered sugar over Manhattan: In New York, more snow fell last week than it had in a long time.

It looks pretty idyllic on the satellite images from the Space Agency Esa.

But the peaceful atmosphere is deceptive.

The residents of the megacity went through a lot in the past seven days.

The image was taken by Copernicus Sentinel-2 on February 4th.

Three days earlier, the New Yorkers had been fighting a snow storm of considerable force that covered the city with around half a meter of snow within a few hours.

The snowstorm has caused traffic chaos in the entire northeastern United States.

Hundreds of flights were canceled and numerous trains were canceled.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio even declared a state of emergency, roads were kept free for the use of emergency vehicles and restricted for all unnecessary journeys.

The state of New Jersey and Philadelphia, the largest city in Pennsylvania, were also in a state of emergency.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy warned of power outages and called on residents to recharge electrical appliances.

But in the end it was not as bad as feared.

Public life was paralyzed - but due to the corona pandemic, most citizens were already used to the call of the »#stayathome«.

Even in Madrid, Spain, there was an onset of winter at the beginning of January.

While in some places people were happy about the snow, others were stuck in their cars for hours.

At least four people were killed.

Germany has also experienced more snowfall in recent weeks than it has for a long time.

The ESA satellites took pictures of snow-covered Berlin (see above).

And winter is not over yet: This week, thanks to low »Tristan«, it should continue to snow, especially in northern Germany.
