Unknown blackmailed the game company CD Projekt.

The Polish company, world-famous for titles such as "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" and "Cyberpunk 2077", published a blackmail letter itself on Tuesday, apparently as a kind of escape forwards.

One or more cyber criminals claim that they stole both game source codes and internal company documents, for example from the accounting department.

If CD Projekt does not contact you within 48 hours, the stolen source code will be sold or put online and the internal documents passed on to gaming journalists, the casually worded letter threatened.

People would then see "how crappy your company works".

At the end of last year, CD Projekt launched the science fiction game »Cyberpunk 2077«, in which hacking is also a game element.

The game sold millions and has many fans, especially the versions for the older consoles Playstation 4 and Xbox One, however, appeared in an extremely unsatisfactory condition (read more about this here).

CD Projekt is still working on updates for »Cyberpunk 2077«, with which more and more problems in the game are to be eliminated.

There should be no negotiations

In a notice that was published together with the extortion letter, CD Projekt announced that it would not respond to the blackmailers' demands and negotiate with them - even if this could lead to the publication of data.

There actually seems to have been access to the data from CD Projekt.

The company writes that some of its internal systems have been compromised.

Someone unknown had unauthorized access to the company's internal network, collected certain data and deposited the ransom note.

Some devices in the network are now encrypted, it is said, but there are back-ups.

As things stand now, there is none of the affected systems on which player data is stored, according to CD Projekt.

The incident has been reported to the relevant authorities and attempts are now being made to investigate it.

The police have already been turned on.
