Mars, Chinese Tianwen-1 probe in orbit

China's debut on Mars was successful: less than 24 hours from the Emirati Hope probe, the Chinese Tianwen-1 also managed to enter orbit the Red Planet correctly, thanks to vigorous braking performed by turning on the main engine for 15 minutes .

This was confirmed by the Xinhua agency, reporting a note from the Chinese Space Agency (CNSA).

China thus becomes the sixth power to reach Mars after the USA, the former USSR, the European Space Agency, India and the United Arab Emirates.

The Tianwen-1 mission also consists of a lander and a rover that will land on the planet's surface in May to study it with 13 instruments.



The Tianwen-1 mission, whose name means 'search for celestial truth', was launched last July 23 taking advantage of the time window in which Mars was in a favorable position with respect to the Earth (an event that occurs every 26 months): for this reason Tianwen started a few days away from the Hope probe of the United Arab Emirates and from the Mars 2020 mission of NASA (the latter should arrive on the Red Planet on February 18).



Tianwen-1 is the second launch of a Chinese vehicle to Mars.

The first dates back to 2011: the Yinghuo-1 probe was lost with the failure of the Russian Phobos-Grunt mission, which failed to enter orbit and then returned to the Pacific in January 2012.



This time China has shown that it has acquired the capabilities necessary to reach Mars, but not only: it is also the first power to deploy an orbiter, a lander and a rover in a single mission to Mars.

The goal is to study the atmosphere, the internal structure and the surface of the planet, with particular attention to traces of water and any signs of life forms.

The orbiter is expected to remain operational in orbit for about two years, while the solar-powered rover is expected to operate for about 90 days.
