Le Scouarnec, "a monster in all its perversions": the niece of the pedophile surgeon testifies

2021-02-11T05:16:14.899Z

She is the niece, and one of the victims, of Joël Le Scouarnec, a former surgeon suspected of being one of the most disturbing pedophiles fra

She counts, with her little sister, among the oldest victims of Joël Le Scouarnec, this uncle of whom she discovered with horror that he would have subsequently made more than 312 victims in the context of his activity as a surgeon, facts for which he was indicted last October.

Tried for a first series of acts committed in his entourage, he was sentenced on December 3 in Saintes (Charente-Maritime) to fifteen years in prison.

Verdict he appealed.

Now 35 years old, Joël Le Scouarnec's niece calls for a general awareness to change the laws and break the omerta that too often prevails in families.

What makes you express yourself today?

With our business, and all those that come out today, I realize that everything we have experienced is there every day.

That is to say, our children are in danger everywhere, all the time.

And that it is a real societal fight, which we must lead, victims and parents, to release this word.

And for the laws to change.

How did the word circulate in your family precisely, where everything seemed to be known?

When my sister, at the age of 9, told us what had happened to her, my mother immediately believed her.

She told my uncle, who promised to be treated, and then his wife, who seemed to know already.

In fact, it was not taboo in the family.

As is often the case, we were heard, but not necessarily listened to.

Because you shouldn't disturb or upset this whole family image.

My grandfather, for example, said: “it's not a crime either”… We understood much later that it was from generation to generation and that he was like his son.

Joël Le Scouarnec was sentenced last December to 15 years in prison.

Verdict he appealed.

Why didn't you file a complaint?

My mother proposed to my sister.

But at that age, you don't know what that means.

In essence, a child will never hurt an adult, so she didn't want to.

You cannot ask a child to make such a decision, it is up to the parents to do it.

In 2017, when we learned that there was another victim

(Editor's note: on his little neighbor in Jonzac),

my first reaction was: "thank you, there are parents who reacted as needed" .

You yourself were a victim… When did you realize it?

When my sister spoke, I knew immediately that she was telling the truth.

But for me, I had almost no memory.

Until the gendarmes called in 2017, because he had mentioned my name… I then remembered the touching.

And then one night, when I had felt a presence, camera flashes, without being able to wake up.

It was only later that I learned everything ...

Joël Le Scouarnec admitted rapes against you during the trial, but was only found guilty of sexual assault.

How do you live it?

It is unfair.

When we took a lawyer with my sister to become civil parties in 2019, I discovered the file, the photos and the writings concerning me… The judge had the evidence in front of her!

But the investigation was already closed, without having been received, and that I could modify my complaint.

The requalification for rape was not accepted at trial.

The law makes it impossible to go back on it.

It's very hard.

When we are not heard at the family level, we say to ourselves that we will be heard by justice.

Despite the writings, the photos, the confessions, the rape is not recognized.

Because I was sleeping, because I forgot ...

How did you experience this trial?

We do not come out unscathed… It was extremely violent, we saw and heard horrors.

He is a pedophile, a monster in all his perversions, urophile, scatophile, zoophile ... After, his confessions counted for me.

That he said his wife knew was important too.

She, she brazenly lied, she denied everything, pretended to be on medication.

She even launched to one of the victims, one of her nieces

(Editor's note: her own sister's daughters):

"you only got what you deserved".

She always protected this man, to preserve his situation, his image, for financial reasons too.

How did that translate at the time?

After my sister, I said to myself: "he will do it again".

So when we learned of the birth of my cousin's daughter

(Editor's note: the granddaughter of Joël Le Scouarnec, whose writings about her raise questions),

we said to ourselves that we absolutely had to protect her.

I wanted to talk to my cousin but my aunt replied "it's not your role, I'll take care of it".

She assured us that she did.

Today, she continues to lie and the law protects her since the facts are prescribed for non-denunciation.

For me, she should be in the cubicle with him.

She could have protected many, many children.

How do you explain that he was able to go under the radars for more than thirty years?

In our family, he was the most successful, he was put on a pedestal, a little untouchable.

On the outside, it's a bit like these cases which concern people with a lot of notoriety: he was a surgeon, with a social image… It's a system.

The director of Jonzac hospital knew

(Editor's note: that he had been convicted in 2005 for possession of child pornography images).

Even justice had not looked further, when there was already all the evidence.

Do you think this case can shake things up?

I am waiting to see if this goes beyond the media boom.

In the proposed changes to the law, I see little awareness of imprescriptibility, the age of consent ... if society does not take more radical measures, we will be at the same point in ten years.
