Covid-19: more than 50,000 dead in Argentina

Argentina exceeded the threshold of 50,000 deaths linked to Covid-19 on Friday February 12 and has more than two million cases of contamination by the coronavirus, announced the Ministry of Health.

In the past 24 hours, 155 new deaths have been recorded, bringing the total death toll to 50,029, the ministry said.

The latest bulletin also reports 7,151 new contaminations, bringing the number of positive cases to 2,015,496, for a country of 45 million inhabitants.

The Argentine government was awaiting the arrival of a plane from the national airline Aerolineas Argentinas carrying 400,000 doses of the Sputnik V vaccine from the Russian Gamaleïa institute on Friday evening.

In previous flights, planes brought 820,000 doses of Sputnik V from Russia, the only vaccine currently available in Argentina.

The Argentine government's vaccination campaign provides for the purchase of 62 million doses from various laboratories, Health Minister Gines Gonzalez Garcia told Congress.

Next week is expected the arrival of 580,000 doses of the Covishield vaccine from the Indian laboratory Serum Institute.

The Minister of Health clarified that the agreements reached will allow Argentina to receive 30 million doses of Sputnik V, 23 million of the AstraZeneca / Oxford vaccine and nine million obtained through the international cooperation mechanism Covax.
