Family in Disorder: Give her time and the wonderful "Shit's Creek" will conquer your heart

Although she broke a historic record for winning the Emmy Awards in the comedy category, "Shit's Creek" really does not burst with laughter.

In one episode of the third season of "The Simpsons," Mr. Burns holds a fake but very prestigious awards ceremony to persuade Homer Simpson to refrain from suing him.

After Homer wins the "Award for Special Achievement in the Field of Excellence," his daughter Lisa responds angrily: "This ceremony is the biggest farce I've ever seen!".

Her brother Barrett innocently asks her, "What about the Emmy Awards?"

Lisa, embarrassed, admits she was wrong.

Still, if the Emmy Awards are still some measure of television quality, then the Canadian "Shit's Creek" is in line with the greatest comedies in history.

This is after picking up nine awards in the past year - including all seven major awards in the genre: Best Series, Best Actor and Supporting Actor, Best Actress and Supporting Actress, Director Award and Screenplay Award.

This is the first time ever that one series sweeps all these awards in one ceremony.

For comparison, the mythical "Seinfeld" has won 10 awards in all its seasons.

"Friends" won four.

Award-winning.

In fact, "Shit's Creek" received 15 nominations for its sixth and final season, more than any other comedy (or drama) graduation season ever.

She also entered the prestigious "Everything Stays in the Family", "Golden Girls" and "Will and Grace" clubs, in which each of the main actors won at least one award.

After also adding prestigious wins at the critics' selection ceremony and on behalf of MTV, it was hard not to wonder: how can it be that this series was never broadcast in Israel?

With a delay in the level of a broken fluorescent lamp, "Shit's Creek" arrives today (Sunday) on HOT, and it's time for refined humor lovers who are not afraid of investing in a long time to dive into one of the most special series aired in the world in recent years.

First, it should be noted that it is a bit strange to write about a series that has been nominated for an Emmy Award in the last two years, after loyal fans almost forgot how much they enjoyed it in real time.

How long has it been?

When the first season of "Shit's Creek" aired, the Labor Party had 24 seats.

Still, this is a great opportunity to stop recommending people to watch a series in a pirated way (simply because there was no other option) and send them on a very rewarding journey.

And now the story of a family that lost everything.

"Shit's Creek" (Photo: PR, HOT)

The series began with two ideas fought together, by creators Daniel Levy and his father Eugene Levy.

Yes, they are both Jews, and you may know Eugene from the regular cast in Christopher Guest's commentary films, or at least as the embarrassing father of the American Pie hero.

Daniel, or Dan to his friends and loyal viewers on MTV Canada, told his father about an idea for a series that would accompany the resume of a wealthy and connected family "like the Kardashians" who got off her property and had to move to a small town with the common people.

It reminded Dad of the story of Kim Basinger, the American actress who bought a small town north of Atlanta for $ 20 million with the thought of becoming a tourist attraction, but was forced to sell it for $ 1 million after nearly going bankrupt.

And so was actually born the Rose family that stands at the center of "Shit's Creek."

The family, who for not so important reasons lose all their fortune, are forced to live like fish out of water in a dilapidated road motel of a small suburban town.

It's a simple and unexciting story just as it sounds.

Father Johnny is a shrewd businessman who needs to get used to life as a seamstress, mother Moira is a soap opera star with a rich collection of Hollywood wigs, son David is a designer with an eclectic and innovative taste that even New York does not keep up with, and beautiful Alexis is a superficial princess accustomed to being repeat By famous stars.

Without doing too many spoilers, in the six seasons of the series all the characters will have to go through big changes - sometimes it will be funny, sometimes pathetic - but always touching.

It is hard to remember a series that loved her characters so much, and treated them so emotionally and without cynicism.

A simple and unexciting story - but also much more than that.

"Shit's Creek" (Photo: PR, HOT)

The series got its name from the small, simple town that Johnny bought as a gift for his son David as a joke for his 16th birthday.

The town of Shit Creek is named after its founder, the Shit Family, which corresponds with the English saying that people in dire straits are: "Up Shit Creek", or literally: deep in a river of shit.

Surprisingly, the slightly vulgar title of the series does not characterize the style of the series, nor its humor.

But Dan and Eugene Levy insisted on this exaggerated name.

In retrospect it can be said that this insistence made the series what it is.

The father and son of the Levy family tried to offer the series to a number of American television networks and cable companies.

HBO and Showtime have given up on pleasure, and not just them.

A first impression is a critical thing in the entertainment world, and when the guy's dad having sex with a hot apple pie in a nineties hit offers you a series with the word "shit" in the title, a dubious first impression is created.

Still, the ABC network decided to give the green light to the project and even participate in the production of the series, but then came the explicit request to change the name of the series.

It is hard to believe that the creators did not expect this demand.

Disney, ABC's parent company, will not soil its brand with such a blatant name, certainly for a series with very limited potential.

The Levies felt that if they let the network change their name, it would be an opening for more artistic changes that Disney would like to make to the series, and they decided to produce the series exclusively on CBC, the Canadian equivalent of the broadcasting corporation here.

Loves her characters.

"Shit's Creek" (Photo: PR, HOT)

This meant, very bravely in retrospect, that the first season of the series was produced only in collaboration with the Canadian corporation, and the budget was mainly based on the sale of distribution rights in the US to the young Pop channel from Viacom (which operates MTV, Nickelodeon and more), which began broadcasting in the United States This was the flagship series of the new channel, which sought to rebrand itself as home to more edgy shows on pop culture. It is doubtful that the channel's people believed that the first series they would invest in would bring them the prestigious Emmy Award. The

show won much praise in its sales, but because Which was broadcast on a paid niche cable channel in the US, and the fact that it was not broadcast in the rest of the world, made it almost completely anonymous.

On the other hand, it also took the pressure off her.

"Shit's Creek" did not have to "provide" receipts or issue high rating numbers.

The lack of pressure allowed the creators to build the series correctly, with the natural and authentic development of all the characters, who go a long way during the series, without twists or effects.

Like in real life.

Has finally become a Netflix hit.

"Shit's Creek" (Photo: PR, PR)

"We were an underdog, and that's what made us work hard," Eugene Levy explained to the British Guardian after the series finally made its way to the old homeland.

"It was like the effect of Justin Bieber. The way people discovered Bieber on YouTube and felt some protective sense of belonging towards him, as if it was a secret they were privileged to discover and have the pleasure of sharing it with the world. People really felt they 'discovered' the show. They wanted to involve their friends and their family and get them to watch the series. "

Everything changed after the third season, when Netflix decided to acquire the distribution rights for the series in the United States.

By this point the series had already taken on a life and pace of its own, and was ready for a large audience to accept it.

That's exactly what happened.

The series exploded without too much PR, mostly through social media.

Of course, it did not hurt that almost every frame of it became a meme, which aroused a lot of curiosity around it and attracted young viewers (very similar to the Israeli "rehearsals").

The effect of Netflix was also a kind of poetic closing of the circle - the series has become one of the most streamed series on streaming networks in the United States in the last year, more than any program of the big competitor Disney, which missed the opportunity to own the successful brand "Dirty".

Natural and authentic development.

"Shit's Creek" (Photo: PR, HOT)

Away from the filthy hooves of Hollywood, the Levy family (Dan’s sister also stars in the series) has managed to create a series that doesn’t chase high ratings, network storms or behind-the-scenes dramas.

"Strange" series in the 21st century sense.

One that is not based on big stars, gimmicks or extreme humor.

A series of characters that arouse disgust at first sight, and their story even arouses some ridicule at first - but slowly they develop, and it's hard not to fall in love with them.

This is not love at first sight.

This is a series that needs to be invested in.

Like a Russian novel.

It's the refined writing, the exemplary acting and even the costume and set design, in which every nuance seems to have been left in loving hands.

The magic of the series begins to germinate already in the first season, but in its second half (starting from the fourth season) it blooms in all its glory, so its humor also becomes melting, and the smile does not leave the face for a moment.

Like meeting a good friend you've seen change for the better, and you're so proud of him.

Persistence plays a key role here.

In the age of FOMO, which has accustomed us to content that captivates us from the first moment and sends us to a fast binge in order to consume everything soon, "Shit's Creek" offers us to cuddle on the road, which is so lucrative.
