WhatsApp Darkness Mode (PR)

In December we first reported that WhatsApp may change the terms, and whoever does not approve the new terms, will be forced to part with the app.

Surfers began to rage and point with their feet as they switched to Signal and Telegram, competing WhatsApp platforms that advocate for privacy.

Shortly afterwards, Facebook announced that it was suspending the change, but is now returning to the original plan.

While the change was expected to take effect by February 8, now Facebook has extended it until May 15.

"We've heard from so many people about how confusing our latest update is. There was a lot of misinformation that caused concern and we want to help everyone understand our principles and facts," they wrote in a blog post on the app in January, in response to the policy rejection.

"Much more is being done to find out the misinformation surrounding the behavior of privacy and security on WhatsApp. Then, people can check the policy at their own pace, before new business options become available on May 15."

The new WhatsApp update addressed the changes when messaging users with businesses.

For example, if you were browsing a catalog of a business user, WhatsApp intended to save the information and "bounce" it on Facebook as well.

WhatsApp has not announced that it will delay the update, but will only test it again, as it plans to launch the new features for businesses on May 15th.

Facebook announced that anyone who does not approve the new terms after May 15 will be subject to restrictions: in the first few weeks it will be possible to receive calls and alerts, but it will not be possible to read the content of the messages or send new messages.

It is not clear what will happen after this period, but according to the rules, WhatsApp deletes inactive accounts after 120 days, and may limit the period during which calls and alerts can be received, to 120 days, after which the account will be deleted.
