A 48-year-old cross-country skier died this Thursday afternoon in the Dévoluy by falling into a chourum, a natural cavity typical of this massif located in the Hautes-Alpes, mountain rescue services indicate.
The forty-something was evolving with three other skiers on the slopes of Rocher Rond, a summit of Dévoluy which rises to 2453 meters above sea level, when shortly before 3 p.m., he fell several tens of meters in a chourum partially covered with snow.
Emergency services alerted by the victim's companions
The man was found dead by rescuers from the High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoon (PGHM) of Briançon, who were alerted to the accident by the victim's companions.
An investigation to determine the circumstances of the tragedy was entrusted to the PGHM of Briançon, which mobilized four rescuers and a doctor to come to its aid.
