Try to be surprised: her designer comes from Bentley (Photo: Keenan Cohen)

Genesis, is a very young luxury division in terms of the automotive world around this lot and decades of manufacturers and rich history, even its young Asian cousins;

Lexus, Infiniti and Akiora The luxury divisions of the draft, Nissan and Honda respectively have been celebrating 32 years in the business.

Hyundai started the Genesis journey more than a decade ago, initially with a model of that name but still under the Hyundai brand and later as a separate brand.

Now, with a more mature product line and after soaring in the markets of the United States, Australia, the Far East and the Near East it will try to succeed in penetrating the European lion's denomination, what has it that failed Japanese have done in this course?

Good question.

"My latest documents"

Do you know that you open a Word or Excel file and your latest documents appear in the menu?

So I'm pretty sure that's exactly what happened to her designer Luke Dunkervalka, the man who from 2012 outlined Bentley's design line just pulled out one of his sketches and just added a few lines, pasted a monstrous grill and clicked "Submit".

And I'm not saying this as an insult to the G80, or to Bentley.

Bottom line, beautiful or not is a matter of taste, but the amount of heads this car on every 500cm of it rotates is a clear measure of how well the business works.

Five meters from end to end (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

The cabin gets a design that is admittedly a click or two aside from the clean and luxurious lines of German or European in general, but here the message is wealth and abundance into the face.

In terms of quality of materials and assembly it has no problem looking at any luxury car in the white of LED headlights and not sure it will blink first.

The natural wood is wood, with the real warmth and touch, the aluminum is aluminum with the metallic cold, the skin is meticulous, taut and precise.

Touching even the most remote parts of the cabin brings together materials that cars would be happy to put in the most prominent location.

So there are some buttons and menus here that are reminiscent of the popular Hyundai models, Schwinn, you will also find it in Audi.

Besides the chance that the customer of such a car at all will know the cabin of Tucson or Elantra and it will bother him is so low anyway.

The wood, wood, aluminum and leather are not "similar" in this group (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

What else is there here?

Oh armature, full armature.

Please let's not finish the whole article on this whole list with the options for massage, cooling, heating, adjusting, inflating - and I'm just in a seat yes?

Not a word about the seats moving backwards towards you in opening the door and its soft closing.

Its safety list is also simply a scroll of letters and systems that put it at the highest safety score level, and that too is probably because there is only up to a score of 8 and not above it.

Many of the functions are controlled by its huge screen (14.5 inches) which is operated by a flat caliper that requires an adjustment section or the touch screen, but it is located a little too far to allow really convenient access.

But this is more or less the only critique of human engineering here, it and the "reverse" and sophisticated RPM meter.

Excellent legroom and comfort in the back seat (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

The back seats, sorry, the straight rear armchairs release some long "lol" as the body sinks into the contents softly.

Both, and the huge legroom here is a 301 cm gift at its wheelbase and the multimedia control and climate control system are more implied that it also targets the type of owner who does not engage in driving himself. For that reason I thought the trunk would be larger than its 244 liters. The price of the sedan configuration is a high and deep claim threshold that makes it difficult to reach objects that have rolled to its depth.

Excellent material quality even in the most remote corners of the cabin, yes, I'm talking about this part on the left side of the door (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

On the road

On the propulsion, a supercharged 2.5-liter gasoline engine with a power of 304 hp, this is the only power unit that Genesis shares with the parent company and it is also in the version of the Sonata that is not sold in Israel. This engine is also powerful in practice, And intermediate accelerations, including a hooligan tendency to wiggle its tail when rushing to load power before adequately aligning the steering wheel. Cylinders and not under full load it also makes a reasonable sound. In relaxed driving the 8-speed planetary automatic transmission does an excellent job, with transmission parts that few robotic gearboxes approach.

For comfort adaptive shock absorbers, in comfort mode they will adjust according to a camera that scans the road forward, in sport mode they will harden.

In this and that it does a pretty good job considering the 19-inch rims of the trim level tested (18 in the elegant finish level).

Does not completely eliminate small fragments but definitely swallowed a bad road to glory used by me for checking comfort.

But the ride comfort here also consists of excellent noise isolation of the kind of looking at the speedometer and saying "oh, that's a much higher number than I guessed."

Any attempt to give a large saloon car dynamic capabilities is commendable.

Success in this?

This is already really something that few manage to do and already requires taking off a hat.

And the G80 does it not bad at all, with a good steering wheel, tight chassis and lots of grip.

True, it does not have the control, balance and accuracy of the BMW 5 Series when pressed hard, and it oscillates a little too much when brought closer to the limits, but if there you are striving and so you drive - then you are not on the same wave.

The brakes are due to the Achilles heel of this whole business, they are just not at the level of the rest of its assemblies.

Once they try to gallop it down a winding road that combines descents, the weight that kisses 1.8 tons in front of one driver and one dose of chickpeas - challenges the brakes that on two occasions have reached recent turns with a noticeable decline.

The fuel consumption in the test was 8.9 km per liter. Here, the Europeans show a clear advantage when they boast plug-in hybrid engines, such as those that are not yet on Genesis' offer at the moment.

At the checkout

It will be possible to deliver an entire article if not a series of articles on what defines "luxury" in the automotive industry, but even after all the explanations, historical reviews, contexts and reputation - the business eventually converges into a four-wheeled product on all components and its price tag.

And so we will sum it up, as a product and price.

So at the product level, the Genesis G80 is not only a great car, but one that already in the first meeting with it makes clear that it is a step that really challenges the best in its group - Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5 Series. Of the others I did not find it cause for concern.

At the price level, the demo car in the "luxury" finish level costs NIS 440,000, but it is not the best deal here, the recommended version is actually the "elegant" one that costs NIS 385,000, lacks very little equipment and gets the better 18-inch rims, leaves You have money in your pocket and it leaves its competitors ashamed that they are so good and still so cheap from them ...
