What pain are we willing to ignore?

A few seconds were enough to turn Aryeh Schiff into a person who took the life of another human being.
The bullets fired, which led to the death of Muhammad al-Atrash, a resident of the Bedouin diaspora who tried to steal his car in Arad, were documented in a chilling video.
The act spawned a heated debate: Did Schiff act in self-defense, and stood bravely in the face of the crime that reached as far as his home;
Or is it a man who took the law into his own hands, and in cold or hot blood fired at close range at a man who might not have been innocent - but who Schiff was not allowed to shoot him to death under any circumstances.
A silent video, a violent wave of crime, hostility between neighbors and one precedent make everything more complicated.
The bloody outcome of the event makes this argument cruel, because in fact taking a stand - we are not choosing the right side, but what pain we are willing to ignore.
The "source" program that dealt with the affair last night was aided by the title "killer or hero" in relation to Schiff.
The viewer will decide as he decides, but the answer to this question necessarily contains an answer to a less comfortable question: Muhammad al-Atrash - a murder victim or a criminal (who is allegedly sentenced to death, according to the equation, even though Israeli law does not contain such an option).

There are extenuating circumstances, but the result is unparalleled.

Despite the narrow headline, source reporter Haim Rivlin, who accompanied Schiff for several months, actually tried to expand beyond it, providing a richly detailed journalistic story.
Schiff of course got the lead role, and it was important for Rivlin to present the man accused of manslaughter as a kind man, an active retiree in the community and a serial volunteer.
On the other hand, he also went to meet El Atrash's brother in the diaspora, with the aim of getting to know the other side of the verse.
Only about half an hour into the article came the shooting documentation, which is hard to remain indifferent to.
Frustrating as it may be, whether Schiff's version convinces you or not, this moment must remain the bottom line: Schiff, a man skilled in gun use, presumably as a military retiree and police volunteer he should be well acquainted with the opening fire procedures, shot another person and caused To his death.
Yes, there are mitigating circumstances, but the result is extremely serious, and should not be taken lightly.
Rivlin tried to give an even broader context to this terrible story, albeit schematically: on the one hand, residents living under a constant threat of theft and a terrible sense of insecurity, with no satisfactory response from the sovereign;
On the other hand, a population in distress that the state neglects and has difficulty dealing with.
On both sides, Rivlin tried to argue, the collision was almost inevitable.

This narrative is elegant and supposedly sensitive, but not convincing enough: the socio-economic situation of Bedouin society is not an excuse for theft and burglary, just as frustration with law enforcement is not an excuse to take the law into one's own hands and shoot someone to death, in cold or hot blood.
Muhammad al-Atrash and Aryeh Schiff made bad, unusual decisions, with tragic consequences.
The rarity of such cases is proof that none of them acted as the reasonable person from his reference group.
To accept the claim that under similar conditions most people would have acted in the same way, is a discount for both, even if one recognizes the real adversities that are in the background.
At the end of this slope, legitimacy for anarchy awaits.
On the sidelines, but not detached from them, it should be noted that in a conversation at the "Makor" studio at the end of the broadcast, which was attended by Rivlin, Shai Daromi and a police representative, presenter Raviv Drucker chose to find out with the latter the issue of crime in Bedouin society.
He actually received an answer to the matter from the representative, who rightly refused to directly link any sector to crime.
But it is worth asking another question here: If Drucker is so interested in talking in the studio about Bedouin society, why did he not invite a Bedouin or a Bedouin instead of one of the three Jewish guests?
This is also a way to choose which pain to ignore.
