In Germany, around 14,500 minors were hospitalized for acute alcohol abuse in 2019.

The Federal Statistical Office announced on Tuesday.

Around 22 percent of the children and adolescents affected by alcohol abuse were therefore younger than 15 years.

The number among 20 to under 25-year-olds was significantly lower with 8800 cases, according to the message.

In the 40 to under 45 year olds there were 7800 inpatient hospital stays in connection with acute alcohol abuse and in the 60 to under 65 year old 6200. Among the reasons why the proportion of children and adolescents between 10 and 18 years compared to other age groups was so high, there was no information.

Young men affected more often than young women

The numbers have risen again, especially in the very young age group: a total of around 3,200 children and adolescents between 10 and 15 years of age were treated with alcohol poisoning in hospital in 2019.

That was an increase of 8.1 percent compared to the previous year.

The number of adolescents aged 15 to under 18 who were seriously drunk in hospital fell by 2.2 percent to 11,200.

According to the information, there were slight differences between the sexes: In 2019, around 7,900 boys and young men had to be hospitalized for alcohol abuse, which was 55 percent of all cases.

The numbers among children and young people are declining, but still more than twice as high as at the turn of the millennium, it said.

In 2000, almost 7,000 children and adolescents were treated as inpatients for alcohol abuse.

The highest value has been there since 2012 with around 18,800 cases.

The effects of the corona pandemic and thus closed bars, alcohol bans in public and contact restrictions on alcohol consumption by children and adolescents were not recorded in the current statistics.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, only the hospital data from the previous year are available, they are the most recent surveys.
