The Paris Court of Appeal on Thursday reduced the sentence imposed on the mother of a jihadist, presumed dead in Syria, by sentencing her to one year in prison suspended for financing terrorism, instead of two years in prison inflicted at first instance.

The defendant, Nathalie Haddadi, was not present when the decision was announced.

His lawyer, Me Josselin Guillon, then announced that he intended to appeal in cassation, because for him "the decision of the Court of Appeal is incomprehensible".

“On the one hand, we recognize my client's guilt while reducing her pain.

It's mind-boggling, ”he responded.

"Basically, he is criticized for not having guessed that his son was going to go to Syria," continued Me Guillon.

The human rights defender stressed that she did not send money to her son when he was in Syria but “when he was on a paradise island” in Malaysia.

Justice accuses Nathalie Haddadi of having sent money to her son, Belabbas Bounaga, but also of having helped this young Franco-Algerian delinquent radicalized in prison to leave France, while he was targeted by a ban leaving the territory.

"She was aware of her son's aspirations"

At the end of the trial at first instance, in 2017, she was sentenced to two years in prison, without a committal warrant.

The forties had explained to the court in 2017 that she simply wanted to "help" her child, "to eat", "to take care of himself".

But the court considered that she had financed terrorism well by paying him plane tickets and sending him money, while he was in Malaysia, part of his journey to Syria, where he had joined the jihadist organization Islamic State (IS).

During the 2017 trial, the prosecutor maintained that Nathalie Haddadi "was aware of her son's aspirations" and "could not fail to understand what was the destination sought".
