Prof. Yaffa Berlowitz, a judge on the committee that awarded the Israel Prize for Literary Studies to Prof. Nitza Ben Dov, regretted it, and now claims that she does not deserve the prize.

This became clear today (Monday) from a letter that Berlowitz sent to the Minister of Education, Yoav Galant, which was published in the "What It Takes" program with Yuval Avivi and Mia Sela in Culture Here.

In the letter, Berlowitz further claims that the choice of Ben Dov was dictated to her in advance.

In a letter to the Minister of Education, Berlowitz wrote, among other things: "Prof. Nitza Ben Dov is a diligent and diverse researcher, but she does not stand for the excellence of Mishkama and above, as demanded by the award (...) I found myself in the minority, and any attempt in advance My election was in vain. The two judges, Prof. Shenhar and Ms. Rotem, were determined to make their choice, and of course they had the right to stand. On the other hand, I was faced with two options: get up and leave the committee, and then I would cause a stir and set you up. "Re-procedures) - or agree. With a heavy heart I agreed. On the other hand, if there was a committee of five judges, the negotiating space would be more open and considerate for a decision."

She further stated in the letter that "I wholeheartedly admit that you chose three women to serve as judges of the committee, however I was amazed when I realized that we were chosen as women to cause affirmative action and award the prize to an investigative woman (...). Gender equality as a sign of excellence. "

Berlowitz notes that she wanted to award the prize this year to literary scholar Prof. Hillel Barzel, adding: "But I found myself forced to give up my free choice and petition, albeit for a gendered choice, but dictated."

In addition, Berlowitz criticizes the selection of author Yehudit Rotem as a judge on the Prize Committee for the Study of Literature.

"In the case of judging the study of Hebrew and general literature, this was a mistake," Berlowitz wrote to the Minister of Education.

"Judging and deciding about a researcher worthy of an award such as the Israel Prize requires knowledge and proficiency in the academic material submitted, not to mention analytical, critical, professional tools. Unfortunately, Ms. Rotem not only did not know the submitted material, but used 'critical' tools. "Emotional, in determining one or another researcher who is 'boring' or 'difficult to understand', hence her preference for an accessible researcher to read. Ms. Rotem and I in a friendly and respectful relationship, but unfortunately she did not fit (and perhaps even sabotage) in her role as a judge."

The Ministry of Education responded: "The committee selected to discuss the award for the study of Hebrew and general literature acted professionally and independently. In the process, its final decision was made impartially and flawlessly. Prof. Berlowitz was also a partner in writing the reasons for awarding the prize. "Textbooks, books of poetry and book editing. The author Yehudit Rotem was appointed a member of the committee in light of her literary skills, the many works she presented and the desire to include creative people in the committee. The ministry rejects any attempt to blame the committee members or the winner."
