A well-functioning equine doping system?

At the end of an investigation of several months conducted by the Central Service of Races and Games of the Central Directorate of the Judicial Police (DCPJ), nine people were indicted by an investigating judge on Thursday at the court of Senlis (Oise).

The charges are multiple: "organized swindle", "forgery and use of forgery", "horse doping" ... The acts were committed between August 2020 and February 2021.

At the heart of the case, the suspicions relate to a man, Andrea Marcialis.

This 37-year-old Italian professional trainer, based in Chantilly (Oise), is suspected of having injected doping products into his horses before races, with the help of veterinarians.

Preview a syringe in hand

"It appears that no less than six horses have been infiltrated with unspecified products, without a prescription, and in an infiltration-race interval of less than 14 days", writes France Galop, in its official bulletin published on March 10.

In August 2020, the professional was notably seen in the racecourse of Saint-Cloud (Hauts-de-Seine) with “a 20 ml syringe in his hand containing a transparent liquid [...] that he then hid it in his pants, ”says France Galop.

According to our information, Andrea Marcialis would have won three million euros in race earnings in 2020 and had around a hundred horses in training.

In police custody, the Italian coach, who has since been placed under judicial supervision, partially admitted the facts.

Contacted this Thursday afternoon, his lawyer had not yet responded to our requests.

For its part, the organizing company of horse races administered a first sanction to Andréa Marcialis.

The latter is "prohibited from exercising his profession of public coach until April 5, 2025" and must pay a fine of 4,000 euros.

On the judicial level, the opening of the preliminary investigation dates back to last September.

After months of wiretapping, physical surveillance and cooperation between police services, France Galop and the National Horse Racing Federation, a large net led to the arrest of 14 people on Monday.

Two licensed veterinarians

According to a source familiar with the matter, Andréa Marcialis would have set up "a real doping structure" with the complicity of two Italian veterinarians, employees of the International Horse Clinic of Gouvieux (Oise), who carried out the injections without a prescription, in margin of the races.

" This is very serious.

As soon as we were warned of these actions, we filed a complaint and proceeded with the dismissal of the two veterinarians, ”reacts Pietro Sinistri, one of the clinic's associates.

The two women, who are among those indicted, denied the allegations against them.

They could also have their right to practice withdrawn.

Among the other protagonists worried by justice, several women and men aged 30 to 40 years are concerned: boys from stables, coaches, employees of Andréa Marcialis ... During searches carried out at the latter, the investigators notably got hold of "a real pharmacopoeia" with "a lot of prohibited doping products".
