American actress Jessica Walter, who for the past two decades has played two of the most toxic and beloved mothers on television, passed away at the age of 80 in her sleep yesterday (Wednesday), the media in the United States reports today.

Walter is best known for her role as Lucille Blueth in the acclaimed comedy series "Arrested Development," as well as Mallory Archer in the animated comedy "Archer."

Even before that, her career spanned many decades.

Among other things, she starred in Clint Eastwood's debut film as a director, "Misty," in 1971.

For her role in which she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award, as well as for the 1966 film The Grand Prix.

Walter even won the Emmy Award for Best Actress in a Mini-Series for her role in "Amy Prentice" from 1974.

Apart from that she was nominated three more times for the award - for a guest role on "The Streets of San Francisco" in 1977, a supporting role in "Trapper John, MD" in 1980 and of course for "Family in Disorder" in 2005.

Over the years she has been featured in dozens of iconic series, including "Mission Impossible", "Colombo", "The Escape", "Law & Order: Special Edition", "Babylon 5", "Ironside", "Hawaii Five Zero", and in the last decade also in "The Big Bang," "NCIS," "Good Girls" and "American Mom."

Walter, a member of a Jewish family from Brooklyn, New York, described herself in a 2008 Los Angeles Times profile article as "not religious, but very Jewish in my soul."
