Is the endless pandemic looming? Our weekly Corona overview

2021-03-26T12:04:23.122Z

A new study dampens the hope of vaccination success, at the same time the special routes are increasing - and the latest from research: our Corona weekly overview.

Timo Lenzen / DER SPIEGEL

Dear readers,

Even after this tumultuous week with desperate ad hoc resolutions such as the Easter rest, which were just as abruptly withdrawn, the longing for good news is great.

We are (the scientists had predicted it, politicians largely ignored the forecasts) in the middle of the third wave, case numbers, incidence values, R-number - everything is on the X-mas course (you may remember the Christmas wave).

Unfortunately, it has to be said that the long-term perspective is not so rosy either.

At least that is what researchers at the University of Warwick want to have calculated using the example of Great Britain, who present their work in the specialist magazine »Lancet Infectious Diseases«.

The key message of the study: Even if a large part of the population is vaccinated (the scientists estimate a rate of 85 percent in their modeling), some measures to protect against infection must be maintained.

If, instead, all restrictions were lifted uncompromisingly, waves of infections would repeatedly sweep through the country - because none of the vaccines has so far offered complete protection against infections for all vaccinated people.

However, according to the assessment of the researchers, things like the mask requirement, quick test strategies and possibly local restrictions would be meant that would have to be continued.

The time of big, tough lockdowns would probably be over after a successful vaccination campaign.

And, depending on your perspective, maybe that's good news.
