The XC40 T5 Recharge is a compact plug-in hybrid SUV that, in the range, travels paired with the 100% electric XC40 and represents the big sister of the 211 HP XC40 T4.

On the version that ANSA Motori tested in the urban, but above all extra-urban version, the overall horsepower available are 262 and therefore more than enough for dynamic driving on mixed terrain.

A city family car, but which also aims at long journeys in full comfort and with the safety of the hybrid engine, the XC40 Plug-in has the particularity of the Twin Engine, or the combination of petrol and electric engine, all loaded on the front-wheel drive. which does not fail to give satisfaction.

From the outside, the only perceptible difference is perhaps only the charging slot, positioned just above the left front wheel arch.

Under the hood beats the 3-cylinder 1.5-liter 180 hp petrol engine, combined with an electric unit that delivers a maximum power of 82 hp.

Powering the electric motogenerator is instead a 10.7 kWh battery pack, positioned under the floor, which allows the car to travel up to 45 km in fully electric mode.

Volvo XC40 T5 Plug-in Hybrid has 3 different driving modes: Pure, Hybrid, Power and Off-Road.

The first allows you to drive with zero emissions up to a maximum speed of 125 km / h, the second combines the potential of the internal combustion engine with the electric one, while the third offers the driver the best possible combination to take advantage of every single horse of the system. thermo-electric.

For our test we used for most of the time the second of the three, the Hybrid that is better suited to everyday use and that also allows you to balance fuel and electricity consumption.

The performances declared by the manufacturer are very respectable: 0-100 km / h sprint covered in 7.3 seconds and a self-limited top speed of 180 km / h, as for all Volvos.

48 liters of petrol enter the fuel tank, while to completely restore the battery pack without a wallbox and from a 2.3 kW domestic socket, it is necessary to wait about five hours.

We recharged it at a domestic socket with a rather dated system, without having any problems.

On board, the welcome is excellent, with the plus of switching on and leaving in total silence.

The 45 km of electric range declared in real driving decrease slightly, but to drive in a truly efficient way and at reduced costs, it is good practice to always keep the battery well charged.

Translated: 'top up' the battery as many times as possible.

The habitability is that characteristic of the new Volvos, therefore very good, and the batteries do not affect in any way the interior spaces.

The trunk is roomy and with the folding of the rear seats you reach a load capacity of 1336 liters.

In our case, the possibility of quickly modulating the rear seats made fun, also arranging a correctly anchored bicycle and a child seat.

News also on board starting with the new Android-based infotainment system, characterized by high customization, greater intuitiveness and new technologies and integrated Google services.

The technology and services created by the developers of Google and Volvo Cars are integrated into the car, while additional apps for music and media optimized and adapted for in-car use will be available through the Google Play Store.
