- l 'opportunity to take stock of the situation on the situation of public security and the action to combat crime.

And in this context the action on the territory, even more important in times of pandemic, sees the cars with the livery of the Police an important signal of the presence of the State next to the citizens and an irreplaceable tool to guarantee safety and timeliness of interventions.

A permanent museum of the vehicles of the State Police - built at the old headquarters of the Fiera di Roma - tells the evolution of the Corps' motorization, starting immediately after the war.

The journey begins with the first vehicles practically standard and modified only in the paintwork (which from 1948 becomes the characteristic Rosso Amaranto) up to - passing by the Alfa Romeo 'Panthers' and the famous Ferrari 250 GTE of Marshal Armando Spatafora supplied to the Police Headquarters of Rome - to the current highly efficient vehicles constantly connected to the digital infrastructures of the Ministry of the Interior.

The Police had only begun to motorize themselves in the 1930s, assigning standard cars to the Police Headquarters, such as the Fiat Balilla or Guzzi motorcycles, Bianchi and Benelli of the National Road Militia, forerunner of the Traffic Police.

But it was only in the post-war period that a more structured vehicle fleet was organized, based on war remnants.

This is the case of the three quarter ton Dodge and Willys Jeeps, used in particular by the Rapid Departments in public order services.

In the field of motorcycles, models from the most varied origins are 'enlisted' such as the British Norton and Bsa, the American Harley Davidson and even some BMWs abandoned by the Wermacht.

The car park - reads a 2008 Modern Police supplement - takes on its precise connotation at the beginning of the 1950s with supply contracts for two cars evaluated as ideal to meet two completely different needs.

The Alfa Romeo 1900, in the 180 km / h Super Ti variant, became the 'Volanti' patrol car for emergency response in 1952, while the Fiat AR, better known as Campagnola, became the vehicle to be used every day for the control of the territory.

This vehicle boasts, among other things, the greatest longevity because it remained in the police car park for over three decades and then passed through the 3 post-war Amaranth Red colors, the Grigioverde of the 1950s and the Medium Blue decided as a new livery. - together with the white bands - in 1976.

The 1900 Super TI - painted black and enriched with a panther decal that highlighted the emergency telephone number, 555 555 - was modified with specific equipment: sunroof, armored windshield, swiveling headlight , radiotelephone and bullet guards in front of the front wheels.

Among the approximately 70 specimens - including cars, motorcycles, scooters, bicycles and even a tracked 'snowcat' hosted at the State Police Car Museum in via dell'Arcadia 20 in Rome - there are also the different generations of Alfa Romeos which have collected the legacy of the glorious 1900, such as 2600 Sprint, the Giulietta, the Giulia (protagonist of many films dedicated to the perennial struggle between cops and thieves) and the subsequent Alfetta, Nuova Giulietta, 75 and 155.

The Giulia Giardinetta is not missing. , specifically built in 324 specimens for the Traffic Police together with the Giorgetti body shop and intended for motorway and emergency services.

In more recent times, and with the opening of supply tenders to non-national manufacturers, the police fleet has been enriched with vehicles of all kinds and the most diverse categories, from Smart for city patrols to various BMWs, Seats, Skoda, Subaru and Volkswagen.

Without forgetting the two Lamborghinis - Gallardo and Huracan - used for very high-speed interventions and transport of organs.
