Several police officers are auditioned as part of the investigation to shed light on the circumstances of the death of young Steve Maia Caniço, who fell in the Loire on the evening of the 2019 music festival, according to a judicial source.

"The investigating magistrate issued at the end of January 2021 a rogatory commission to the IGPN (General Inspectorate of the National Police) tending in particular to hear again or hear people who had not yet been heard within the framework of the first investigations", indicated to Philippe Astruc, prosecutor of Rennes, where the affair was disoriented.

“This concerns in particular the personnel of the national police being concerned by the intervention in question or the management of public order on the evening of the events.

These hearings are underway, ”added the prosecutor, confirming information from the local press.

Criminal responsibilities “possibly” envisaged

Steve Maia Caniço, a 24-year-old extracurricular animator, went to an electro evening on the banks of the Loire on the night of June 21 to 22, 2019. His body was found drowned in the river more than a month later.

His disappearance had triggered great emotion in the city where demonstrators demanded "Justice for Steve", judging the police intervention and the use of tear gas disproportionate in front of young people having fun in a neighborhood without housing.

"The possible criminal responsibilities could be considered in the coming weeks, with the return of the acts carried out on rogatory commission, and of all the ordered expertises", specified Mr. Astruc.

Three judicial information investigated in this case

At the beginning of October, a reconstruction took place for four hours at Quai Wilson in Nantes, to determine in particular "the very precise time and place of the victim's fall in the Loire", according to the same source.

"The investigating magistrate was made addressee at the end of 2020 of a progress expert report, the final conclusions of which should be awaited on these two important points", continued Mr. Astruc.

In total, three judicial inquiries "against X" are being investigated in Rennes in this case.

One for "manslaughter" concerning the death of Steve, the other for "endangering the life of others", concerning the police intervention, and the third for violence against "person holding public authority. »With regard to the attack on the police.
