Weakness in Qualcomm processors reveals hundreds of millions of Android devices (Photo: Walla !, Mikey Levy)

Hundreds of millions of Android devices at risk: The Israeli information security company Check Point found a significant weakness in the cellular modem of the chip giant Qualcomm.

The chip is responsible for communication in almost 40% of the smartphones in the world.

If the vulnerability is exploited, the attacker could have used the Android operating system to send malicious and invisible code to the phones, giving the attackers access to the SMS messages and audio of the phone calls.

The chip is found in smartphones from Google, Samsung, LG Shiomi and OnePlus.

However, Samsung smartphones are marketed in Israel with the Exynos chipset, so it is likely that you are not in danger if you have a Samsung purchased in Israel.

"Cellular modem chips are the crown jewel for hackers, especially Qualcomm because they are used by hundreds of millions of devices worldwide. Yaniv Belmes, director of cyber research at Check Point.

We also noted at Check Point that the attackers were able to gain access to the SIM in the device, thus overcoming the limitations of the cellular provider.

At this stage it is not clear whether the weakness was exploited and if so, what its scope is, but it is a dangerous weakness that can be sent to the victim without his knowledge, and at the same time gain access to text messages, and calls.

For example, two-step verification messages sent to the victim's device, including messages from the bank, could be accessed.

Therefore, we have updated the operating system version to the latest.

  • Download apps only through Google's official app store.

This is not a guarantee that all apps will be safe and undamaged, but it will still significantly reduce the chances.
