Nursing anesthetists, these little-known medical auxiliaries

When working in collaboration with the anesthetist-resuscitator, behind the operating field, the role of the nurse anesthetist is not limited to the preparation and injection of a prescription drug.


As of January 1, 2020, there were 11,211 working in France. Professionals with little presence in the media, State-certified nurse anesthetists (IADE) are unknown to the general public.

These specialized medical assistants work mostly within the anesthetic team, particularly in the operating room or on technical platforms.

The IADE is authorized to practice anesthesia and to provide autonomy for the replacement of vital functions within a defined and safe framework.

He works in close collaboration with anesthetists and resuscitators, and the relationship of trust that animates their pair guarantees patients safe care.
