The government tabled on Wednesday, the day of the police demonstration in front of the National Assembly, an amendment providing for the security sentence to be increased to 30 years for people sentenced to life imprisonment for a crime committed against a police officer or a gendarme.
This amendment should be voted on during the week as part of the examination at the Palais Bourbon of the bill for "confidence" in the justice of Eric Dupond-Moretti.
It reflects one of the announcements made by Jean Castex on May 10 of a tougher sentence for law enforcement aggressors, after the murder of Brigadier Eric Masson in Avignon.
Thousands of police officers, but also the Minister of the Interior and politicians of all stripes are expected near the Assembly at midday, two weeks to the day after this tragedy which shook the police, asking for a firmer “penal response”.
"Very firm repression"
In detail, the amendment tabled on Wednesday explains in its explanatory memorandum that currently, in the event of life imprisonment for a murder committed on persons holding public authority, the security period which is normally 22 years can be extended. at age 30 or cover the entire sentence, but only in the event of a crime committed in an organized gang.
"This limitation is in no way justified, and this amendment proposes to remove it in order to allow a very strong repression against the perpetrators of these acts which seriously endanger public security, and to prevent reductions in penalty does not apply in such cases ”, it is indicated.
Other government amendments already planned to tighten the section on the reductions in sentences for law enforcement aggressors. The police union organizations are calling for irreducible sentences or minimum sentences.
