Trailer "Wonder Woman 1984" (PR)

People from all over the world call us to ask how we did it: for 15 months, most cinemas in Israel were closed. Even while the rest of the world opened them, with us they went on strike for various and odd reasons, some not committed to reality, but what does it matter now? What was was, and the main thing is that on Thursday they will finally open.

Return to routine will be under certain restrictions, which can be read here. By and large, there will be "green mark" screenings for the vaccinated only, which means that children will not be able to enter them; And the "Purple Character" screenings, which will also allow entry for those who have not yet been vaccinated. The good news (or bad, actually) is that it will be possible to buy popcorn, and also eat it in the hall. However, keep in mind that except when chewing, one should sit in the hall with the mask on throughout the screening. It will be interesting to see to what extent the viewers and ushers will indeed adhere to this limitation.

It is important to clarify: in the last two months, some of the cinemas in Israel have started operating almost as usual, for example the Tel Aviv Cinematheque.

But it was a small amount of places, and they screened a limited selection of films.

Now, everyone without exception is back to routine, including the big networks, and it is advisable to check their official websites for hours and screening times, and of course to book a ticket in advance.

At this stage, the selection of films is not particularly attractive, and mainly includes many products that have long been available with us for home viewing, although not illegal.

New Hollywood blockbusters, such as Marvel's "Black Widow," will only arrive later this summer, and local distributors are also keeping some of their pearls on the shelf, and will surely start releasing them bit by bit so as not to create too much of a burden on the halls.

From what will be available in the halls as early as this coming Thursday, here are the prominent names.

Wonder Woman 1984

How late is it coming to us:

The film was released in the United States at the end of December, in a groundbreaking distribution model in terms of Hollywood studios that included screening in theaters and at the same time in streaming. There were countries, France for example, where it was screened exclusively on the small screen - and Israel, the country where the star of this comic book fantasy was born and raised, is now becoming the last territory in the world where "Wonder Woman 1984" is legally available.

What it is about:

The first episode of the "Wonder Woman" series was a huge hit at the Israel box office, also because of Gal Gadot's presence, presumably. As its name implies, it takes place in the mid-1980s. The superheroine tries to lead a normal life routine in the hat of her alter-ego human, Diana Prince. She works as a senior researcher at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, far from the adventures of the first film, but of course they haunt her there as well.

An ancient stone is rolled into the place, which has the power to fulfill every wish of the one who holds it, and there are probably those who abuse it.

One of them is a loser and megalomaniacal businessman, who uses the natural resource in a way that endangers the world;

The other is a new museum worker, played by Kristen Wiig, who is jealous of Diana and dreams of being like her, until the wish gets out of hand.

Who is it for:

fans of Gadot, who remain loyal to her even after her post about the war in Gaza.

And note: the film is also distributed in a dubbed version in Hebrew, so you can go with the whole family.

Admit guilt: We loved the movie, and here's our full review.

Land of nomads

How late he comes to us: the

film premiered at the Venice Film Festival last September, where it won the Golden Lion.

It aired in the United States in February, where it won three Oscars - for director Chloe Zhou, for starring Frances McDormand and for Best Picture.

What it's about:

A quasi-documentary, in which McDormand stars alongside many unprofessional actors, who follow the people who move and roam the vast expanses of the United States - some because of constraints and some by choice, because that's how it is in America, for better or worse.

Who is it for:

McDormand's fans, while performing in the Pantheon, for those who want to discover the real America and for those for whom the title of "Oscar winner for best film" impresses.

soul

How late is it coming to us:

"Soul" became the first Pixar animation studio film not to be released in theaters in the United States, and went live on streaming last December. A month ago, as is usually the case with studio films, he won two Oscars - Best Original Music and Best Animated Film.

What it is about: In

addition to its streaming distribution, "Soul" has set another precedent. It's Pixar's first feature film about a black man - a failed New York musician who refuses to give up on his dreams.

Until the fantasy is fulfilled, Joe settles for teaching music to young students, and after one of his lessons, the opportunity that has been waiting for him all his life lands: to play alongside a legendary musician. Her audition is so successful that the dreamy pianist comes out of it dizzy, not looking where he's going - and falls into a hole in the road.

It ascends to heaven and due to another combination of circumstances, reaches a kind of limbo. Along with it are souls that have not yet been born, and are undergoing training before they can roll into people's bodies. Prominent among these is one sullen and stubborn soul, who refuses to do his duty and go on a mission on earth.

Even the protagonist of the film is unwilling to do what is required of him, and refuses to accept the fact that he ended his life a moment before justifying his existence. As a result, the newborn causes a commotion in which he and his new girlfriend fall to Earth. Then comes another twist, forcing them to join forces to solve the complication. Meanwhile, the soul that has never experienced the world discovers it for the first time - and the musician who has never really lived life discovers its meaning.

Who is it for:

For those looking for a deep and inspiring film that will change their lives for the better.

As is customary in the world of animation, the film is distributed here in the original version, with the voices of Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey, and also in a dubbed version - so you can go with the whole family and make them all better people together.

Tent

How late is it coming to us:

The film was distributed in theaters in Europe and the United States between summer and autumn, and went up there in streaming in late December.

What it's about:

Oh, good question.

Christopher Nolan, who has already enjoyed playing with our brains in "Memento" and "Beginning," among other things, surpasses himself here with a film in which only those who have spent 800 on psychometrics can try to figure out what's going on.

In a nutshell: spies are trying to save the world as we know it, all against the backdrop of bombastic action scenes.

Starring: Robert Pattinson, John David Washington, Elizabeth Sticky, Kenneth Branagh.

Who is it for: For

fans of the director who loves mental pranks.

Just one

How late he comes to us: a

relatively light delay.

The film was released in the United States just over two months ago.

What it's about:

a sort of folk version of "History of Violence," which belongs like it to the sub-genre of the films about the gray family man, whose one unclear evening turns out to hide a dark past, and a miraculous ability to mow down the bad guys.

Starring: Idol Bob Odenkirk, star of "Trust Sol".

Who it's for:

Lovers of "John Wick" -style action comedy.

Derek Colstad, who wrote the successful film series starring Keanu Reeves, also wrote this film.

my life story

How late it comes to us: the

film opened the Venice Film Festival in the summer of 2019 and was distributed in France in December of that year.

A lot of water has flowed in European rivers since then.

What it is about:

The first international film by the Japanese director Hirokazu Kora-eda, many of whose Japanese-speaking films were distributed in Israel and were successful and appreciated - for example, "My Little Sister" and "My Family."

But with all due respect to the wonderful filmmaker, the big story here is the historic and perhaps one-off summit meeting between two of the great actresses in France, Catherine Deneuve and Juliette Binoche.

Danev actually plays herself, a legendary movie star, and the film describes what happens when she publishes a revealing memoir to the astonishment of her daughter, played by Binush.

Who is it for: For

lovers of French cinema.

Then we danced

How late he comes to us: the

film was screened for the first time in May 2019 at the Cannes Film Festival, and its Israeli premiere took place at the Jerusalem Film Festival in the summer of that year.

What it's about:

Ben Akin's film, a Swedish director of Georgian origin, is a sort of modern, queer and musical version of "Late Wedding."

"Then We Danced" is about a 17-year-old dancer who solidifies his personal, artistic and sexual identity and rebels against the traditional cables of Georgian society.

The film does so in a way that has provoked a violent storm in the conservative country, but the result is also interesting regardless of the turmoil around it.

Who is it for:

Those who are interested in dance and / or Georgian society, and those who are looking for artistic but communicative world cinema.

The excellent soundtrack of the film

Danny Caravan

How late he comes to us:

no delay!

The film was premiered last winter as part of the local documentary competition of the Jerusalem Festival, came up in a small distribution about two months ago as part of the slow return to routine and now more screenings are being added.

What it's about:

Barak Heiman, one of Israel's leading documentary filmmakers, paints a portrait of the world - renowned artist, who is revealed here as an eccentric and irritated type in the amusing sense of the word: every second that Larry David does not star in a feature film about him is a wasted moment.

The result is a delightful docu, in which there is no unnecessary second, and in addition to dealing with the caravan itself, the director also talks here about a broader issue: the way in which art blends into the personal, public and political space.

Who is it for:

For those who like Danny Caravan and / or Larry David style characters and / or documentaries about the space between art and politics.

Personal Assistant

How late it comes to us: the

film was screened at the Sundance Film Festival and then at the Berlin Film Festival in the winter of 2020, but it should be noted that it came up with us in limited distribution about two months ago. Now, there are more halls where he can be seen.

what's the matter?

Julia Garner, the Emmy winner for "Ozark," is showcasing her great and good cinematic display to date. As the film implies, she plays a personal assistant to a senior in the entertainment world, who turns out to be the son of Harvey Weinstein - and many other annoying predators, so she finds herself a witness to his criminal actions.

"Personal Assistant" was written and directed by Kitty Green, which is her debut work, and is recorded as the first successful American cinema deal with Metoo.

Beyond its intensity and the quality of the gameplay, this drama is noteworthy because it manages to place the events in a broad gender-economic-class context, and describe how the sex offenders used their power to whitewash their exploits, exposing those who witnessed them to an impossible choice: Shut up, or talk and lose the opportunity to maintain the livelihood they so desperately need.

Who is it for:

For those who want to see one of the best actresses of our generation, just before she makes her final break;

For those who want to understand how the world works, and why it is so rotten.

and what else?

Two sequels - "Bill and Ted Burn Time", the third episode in the "Bill and Ted" series, which was released in America about a year ago and left no special mark;

"Trolls Around the World", a sequel to the animated hit in Israel, was especially popular;

"Thief with Honor," an action thriller with Liam Neeson;

And "Unstoppable," an action thriller with Russell Crowe;

And "Betrayal" by Doron Eran, a veteran director in Israel, starring Aki Avni.

And there are more movies, and there will be many more in the coming weeks, just like in the good old days.
