Listen here to the podcast "Talking Culture" with Shalom Hanoch:

During the tension, nerves and stress that we all experienced in Operation "The Guardian of the Walls" - Shalom Hanoch experiences the most opposite experience imaginable.

"I went to Sinai," the huge musician says in an interview with Walla!

Culture (listen up for the full interview).

I had no idea it would fall just in time for the military operation, but that's what happened.

I went there to completely disconnect and really experienced the opposite extreme there.

All around was just calm, sand, sea and red mountains.

I came back clean and now I am ready to receive any missile they send. "

And again we find ourselves between battles. Are you optimistic about this project called Israel?

"I'm not optimistic about the way of fighting, the masculine, the forceful way. In this way nothing can be achieved. I'm optimistic about this place, this country. But because of the system and the government, I would not say I am optimistic about the country. I think it can not go on "It's been like this for so long. After all, in another 300 years, everything will be different. But what determines everything here is how things are going, and at the moment the state is not doing well. There is no manager, no managers, and most importantly - no manager. I recommend a manager."

This is not the first time you have actually talked about the need for female leadership.

"Not even leadership but management. Women know how to manage much more than men."

Why?

"Look at your house. Look who's running there. Everything else is child's play - power, wars, to-to-to."

Do you have specific names of women you would like to see in a management position?

"I'm looking. In the meantime all the women I asked if they were willing to take on, ones I thought had skills, said to me 'what do I need this for?'".

Again, within himself: Shalom Hanoch's intimate album is his best for years

Release of a great new album - "Herzl Lillenblum". First of all, why "Herzl Lilienblum"? What is in this Tel Aviv corner?

"My house is not far away. Every morning before I go to bed - I go to bed more or less in the morning - I see the green truck with the two workers in the back on the step. That's where the name comes from. Usually they do the traffic jam but this time they got stuck in traffic. ".

You and Moshe Levy introduced the musician Eli Magen to your long relationship and suddenly you became a trio. How does it feel to add someone else?

"Wonderful. Mostly it's me, who's a friend. It was just great. He plays beautifully, sings beautifully, and it also added change and creativity."

And it's another sound to consider.

"I like being told and I hear what I'm being told. It just adds to the work. I don't think I could have done things alone without the people around me changing. It's very frustrating."

You worked with Eli many years ago. What happened when you suddenly decided to cooperate?

"True, we worked in the Nahal band. He was a guitarist there. Over the years we were friends and we were in touch. He finished working with the Philharmonic, we met, he said ‘let’s do something together’, and I saw no other answer other than ‘come on come on’. ”

You could say this is your first album without any consideration of being liked by the outside world? I mean, an album like you Love? Not produced too much?

"Yes, you can say that without referring to anything else. This may be the first album that may not actually be produced. Is more natural. I thought after all the albums that were, it was time to make one like that and get into the more authentic area. After all, in music everything is productions. Then what happens? As a songwriter and performer - I know the distance between the song written and what happens to it at the end. There's a lot of Devin in it, nothing to say. And that's what works, too. Sometimes I have no power over these things. I started this album from a lack of production and I managed to keep it to the end. "

How did you think he would be accepted?

"I did not think".

Didn't you mess with it?

"No. I thank you and tell you honestly. I hope it will be well received but I do not think about it. Impossible. That is not the point. The matter is not how it will be accepted because I have no idea. I have no idea."

Every time it surprises you again?

"Any response or no response surprises me. You can tell me 'this album is better than the previous ones', but I'm not sure if I get the opinion of others. So I do not think in advance what they will think. What is, I do try to do something every time Other".

In the end the reviews for the album were great.

"I said it was not up to me anymore. I did not aim for that."

But do you read reviews? Do you enjoy paragons?

"I admit not, I do not read so much. I have a very certain perception of what criticism is and what its role is. I do not accept this matter that a song has to go through this filter. The critic talks to the audience about the product, he does not let the audience consume it. But. "I made the product, I took it out. Fortunately, from time to time it is well received."

So you prefer the enthusiastic response from the audience than from critics?

"The critic is also an audience. No more. That he writes and has power - in the end it is only his personal opinion. I would like a critic to start with the words 'in my opinion', or 'I was impressed' and not determine for others. But this is the way of the world so I do not "I'm dealing with it. But I'm really not messing with it."

How do you write songs? Which comes first - the words? The melody? Has that changed over the years?

"In all forms. Also lying down, also sitting (laughs). Sometimes there is a literal line, sometimes a chorus or the beginning of a song comes. And a lot of melodies that come to me while playing. I really like to play for myself at home. I am constantly looking for something there, and then there is "Influence speaks to each other. There are times when I come and know what I want. So either I write words first, or a piece of music rings me and then I say to myself 'Hoppa, I want to go in that direction'. Then I will adjust the words to it as much as I can."

And does this magic sometimes happen that everyone dresses together in ten minutes?

"That's what happens. There are also things I work on for a long time."

And you release the melodies that are stuck?

"Sure. Hundreds of them. Maybe they're coming back the way I do not feel. I'm actually in favor of releasing. Besides today there are recordings. I record a lot. This album has songs that are not from now on.It's been a long time. "

For example, "Then we did not know" you wrote after Rabin's assassination. What took you so long to get it out?

"It didn't take me, it took a song. Apparently there were other songs that knocked more on the door and more wanted to come out and that song waited."

You have decided not to use the drums on this album.

"It's not a decision. The three of us played and we felt very good. It was an atmosphere of creation together. We did not want to spoil it, to quarter it."

How hard is it to walk with the burden on the shoulders of "Live Legend", "King of Rock", "The Greatest Musician in Israel"? Is it a burden or a blessing?

"I do not go with it. It has an effect on me of course and there is a burden. I guess the biggest burden of all this is the expectations that others have. The media collects quotes from me in the archives, and at my age I can say it's such an amount I can not always appear as I am. There are things that have stuck together along the way and there is nothing to do, you can not change a photo or opinion of someone or wrong things said or gossip and nonsense. You can not. What is it like to go with these degrees? I get along, I admit.I am not looking for the "I'm not looking for the response of them saying 'wow what peace has done now.' If I'm not looking, it's letting me."

Were there days you were looking for? That it's more oppressive?

"When I was more dedicated to my career. But I never gave up on myself. I can not stutter here."

Were there moments when you got tired of being famous? That anyone can say talk to you? Ultimately you are in the public domain.

"I meet more and more people who tell me how much they love me. What could be wrong with that? It can not be bad. Sometimes people think I can not escape from the public eye, so I actually can and then I do not go out much from home. Abroad I Feels great when I'm an unfamiliar person, because that's my nature. I do not know how important advertising is to me personally. "

What has changed in people's reactions to you over the years?

" There are more reactions of love. Nothing has changed. It all boils down to performances in the end. All the rest is not exactly me. I am in a show and the audience that comes to my shows meets me as I am. That's the story. "

Are you being asked for a selfie on the street?

" Oh yeah, it's just nagging. I do not like to be photographed. I often have to be photographed and sometimes I also say 'no, sorry' ".

A great many veteran artists are upset that their contemporary songs are not played on the radio and that their audience demands the songs of yesteryear. Does it affect you too? It sucks you too that everyone wants past hits?

"No. It's a fact, it's the reality. I understand that too. So in performances (Shalom will perform on July 9 at Brenner Concert Hall and on July 22 at Zappa Amphi Shoni) I do not put in a lot of new material that audiences do not know. It takes time for people to digest and get to know Songs. The fact that they like old songs indicates that it took them a long time to like these songs. It's okay. What do you tell them? They want to enjoy. In the process I try to innovate a little each time. If I renew a lot - I can sign you that it will not be accepted. "They come for what they know. People want to hear what they like, I understand them. Maybe I would be happy if the media was a little more diverse and not brainwashed with just one song."

You mean, like, saltines and their ilk, eh?

"Yes, because the radio directs what it broadcasts. On the net, everyone does what he wants. Also on the subject of criticism, there is snobbery that prevents pluralism. I think it is worthwhile. And it's not a matter of my taste because I - I do not care, I love everything, all the time "That's not idiotic. But you really have to help. If you're in this field, if you're a radio broadcaster or an editor, come on, help, find out what you like, not what you think the audience wants to hear. People can open their heads because of you."

"Let the radio open people's heads."

Hanoch (Photo: Berni Ardov)

Do you really like all kinds of music?

"Don't ask me what. I do not want to say what I do not like."

You also have an affair with hip-hop. Releasing a song with rapper Tuna.

"Romance (laughs)! With Tuna it's awfully nice. We met and it's awfully nice. I know hip-hop through the US of course. There are things I fly over, it's a very essential genre. But if you say 'novel', let's see. I don 't think I'm in love with it anymore. In the meantime, I'm trying it. "

What else has caught you in the world? In Israel?

" "I like South American, Spanish, Arabic, indie, Deftons

music

."

But pop you like less.

"True, pop does not. You're right. But I never really liked pop. "

Coldplay you don't like either?

" "I can not say I like. I hope they are not offended. "

Are there any songs you are tired of singing at shows?

"So I do not sing them. I will not tell you what these songs are. "

You got into a kind of capsule in this corona and created the new album.

How did the corona go about you in general?

"Everyone went into the capsule in Corona. At that time we took advantage of the time and just played. I must say it passed over me on who rests, with great creativity. It did not change me. It did me no harm. I know of course what it did to others so unpleasant I have so much to say that it has passed me by. "

Indeed in the latest album you are dealing with an economic and social collapse of artists as well. You must have been exposed to it up close in Corona.

"Yes, and I gave it expression. I did not talk much with them. I do not investigate this matter. I was aware of what it did to others and looked for what I could do."

Didn't you miss the shows?

"No".

How can it be?

"Listen, I like gigs but more I like writing songs. I used the time to write. What I spend is a pinch."

Is it true that you do not like to be asked what you meant by the song?

"That's very true. Why do I not like? Because it's either talking a lot or saying nothing."

What would the course of your life have been like if you had not met Arik Einstein?

"It's funny because it's like I would ask you what the course of your life would have been like if you had not been born or if you had been born to another mother. I think I would not have had it so easy if I had not met Eric. I think meeting Eric did a lot for me. "I have an easier way of getting to know my abilities, and I did it, of course, modestly and quietly. In the end, of course, it came out. I guess it might have been harder, but I can not guarantee it."

Is there anything in the era of the coop gang that you particularly miss?

"I do not miss this period. I do not miss in general."

But people you sure miss.

"There are people I love. I stayed their friend, but I do not miss. Here, director Boaz Davidson called me yesterday from Los Angeles. He heard the album and he spilled it. It's a lot of fun. We haven't talked for many years. Eric, by the way, still. He did not call. "

Your daughter Rumi is a very talented musician. Before she went in the direction of music, did you warn her?

"I did not tell her anything. She grew up like that. From the age of zero she has been writing songs. How do you say? It chose her. She was born like that. Maybe I, too, by the way. You do not argue with such a thing. I very much like her. But you "I do not mention my grandson Omri. I already hosted him at the show at the age of 10. He recently released a lovely song and is very popular."

Does age occupy you? Old age? Death?

"Yes. Death is not because there is nothing to think about it, but age is yes. When you are my age then you will understand. It concerns me but it also concerns my point of view. The point of view because of age becomes age."

What has changed in you?

"I have not changed. I am the same child he was."

The same one who wrote "Night" at the age of 15?

"Yes. The same child. I only grew up since then, I saw a world, but even then I lived within a world."

You got a perspective.

"Yes. A perspective that is not absolute."

People are more reconciled in old age.

"I am reconciled in the sense of receiving. Accepting fact, accepting reality. I do not know if reconciled is the exact word, because the same things that always bothered me, bother me even today. But the understanding and lack of a dream that it will change - you less dream. You less deceive yourself. "You think you can influence things less."

An artist can not influence things?

"Somewhere on an ongoing basis it affects. Art and culture affect. I think it will continue to affect as well, but the question is whether all the things that interfere with it will continue as well or decrease.Culture is actually the content of life and it is a pity that it is so disturbed. "

What do you see on TV?

"I watch football, sometimes basketball, most of all I like football. Sports in general. I see funny things here and there too. I have the power to laugh a little. And I also watch movies. I haven't been to the movies in years, so I watch movies at home."

Netflix?

"Netflix, yes, too. We sit and say, 'Let's see this movie. We may or may not fall.'"

What about series?

"I'm less in the segment, even though I saw some but don't ask me which one, because I don't remember."

And news you see?

"Occasionally yes. Just knowing what's going on but when they all start yelling and talking together, I turn it off."

What is your big dream that you have not yet fulfilled?

"Being a kid again. Just, I'm kidding of course. My dreams are so many it will take a day just to talk to them. But my dreams are just personal. As for a career, I have no dreams."Oh, and I also have a dream that it will be good here."
