Covid-19: South African, Brazilian and Indian variants are progressing slowly

DECRYPTION - Source of concern, these variants are not very present in France. Health professionals still call for strengthening sequencing.


At the beginning of May, the English variant represented more than 80% of positive tests in France.

But the Indian, Brazilian or South African variants are now competing with it: the weight of the English variant was 77.9% for the week of May 10, according to Public Health France, while the cumulative share of the South African and Brazilian variants flirted with the 6%.

With strong regional disparities: the Brazilian variant dominates in Guyana (92%) and the South African in Reunion (90%).

The latter also represented at the end of April 11% of new infections in Île-de-France according to Public Health France.

“In mid-May, there are pockets in particular in Seine-Saint-Denis where the South African and Brazilian variants represent more than 15% of new infections,”

says Laurent Kbaier, biologist at Biogroup.
